Chapter 64: Chapter 25: Why Does She Love a Scumbag? How Am I Worse Than the Scumbag? (Please Favorite and Vote)
Luo Fei and Wang Lei just walked out of Wang Wenying’s house.
"No wonder Zeng Tianming wanted to kill his own son; there’s such a story behind it," Wang Lei sighed, then asked, "Now that we know why Zeng Tianming loathes his own son, do you think he’ll confess this time?"
Luo Fei thought for a moment and replied, "There’s a seventy to eighty percent chance. The more someone hates and fixates on something, the easier it is to break their psychological defense. However, whether it works or not, we’ll only know after trying."
At noon, Luo Fei and Wang Lei returned to the criminal investigation team.
They immediately found Zhao Donglai and Yang Su to report what they had learned.
After understanding the situation, Zhao Donglai promptly convened a temporary meeting to focus on how to interrogate Zeng Tianming, break down his psychological defenses, and make him confess everything voluntarily.
After about an hour of discussion, they finally set the tone for the interrogation: using provocative language and psychological pressure as deterrents.
At two o’clock in the afternoon, the criminal investigation team conducted the second interrogation of Zeng Tianming.
The interrogation was still led by Zhao Donglai, with Yang Su taking notes.
Zeng Tianming was brought into the interrogation room again.
"How many times have I told you? I didn’t kill anyone. I am truly innocent. You spend all this time on me instead of catching the real killer. I don’t even know what to say to you," Zeng Tianming said, looking helpless.
"Enough! We police officers never wrong the innocent but also never let the guilty go unpunished. You claim we are wronging you? You claim you didn’t kill your own son? Do you dare swear on your conscience?" Zhao Donglai shouted angrily, his voice cold.
"What’s there to be afraid of?" Zeng Tianming appeared indifferent, then solemnly declared, "I, Zeng Tianming, swear on my conscience that I absolutely did not kill my own son."
"I really don’t understand how there can be a father like you in this world," Zhao Donglai said, shaking his head.
"Say what you will; anyway, I didn’t kill my own son," Zeng Tianming insisted confidently.
"Do you know what this piece of paper in my hand is?" Zhao Donglai pulled out a document.
Zeng Tianming glanced at the paper and said discontentedly, "How would I know what that is?"
Zhao Donglai replied, "This is a DNA identification report. When our people suspected you killed your own son, we assumed a father wouldn’t kill his child. So we took your hair and compared it with the deceased’s DNA. The report shows a 99.9% match, meaning the deceased was undoubtedly your biological son."
As Zhao Donglai finished speaking, there was a slight ripple of emotion on Zeng Tianming’s usually calm face, though he managed to control it well.
"Of course Xiaoguang is my biological son; otherwise, whose son could he be?" Zeng Tianming retorted.
"I thought you didn’t know! I know the reason you dislike or even hate your own son. Is it because Xiaoguang looks a lot like your wife’s first love?" Zhao Donglai asked coldly.
"Says who? My son definitely looks like me. How could he possibly look like that scumbag?" When he heard Zhao Donglai mention that his son resembled Kang Jian, Zeng Tianming became visibly agitated.
"Really? Then why did we learn that during your high school reunion, everyone assumed the child was Kang Jian and Wang Wenying’s?" Zhao Donglai countered.
"Nonsense! There’s no such thing," Zeng Tianming retorted, his face dark with anger.
"Don’t bother explaining. It’s precisely because your son looks like your wife’s first love that you dislike him. Besides, Wang Wenying got together with you because she mistakenly thought she was pregnant. She always had only Kang Jian in her heart, which is why you doubted Wang Wenying’s feelings for you and always suspected that Zeng Xiaoguang was Kang Jian and Wang Wenying’s child. You became even more disgusted that he looked like Kang Jian, which is why, when extorted with fifty thousand by Yang Cheng and Zhou Zhi, you thought of killing your own son, isn’t that so?" Zhao Donglai loudly accused.
"No, you’re making all this up," Zeng Tianming shook his head vigorously in denial.
"No? Stop deceiving yourself. Even though you were with Wang Wenying, you could never let go of the fact that she had been with Kang Jian. You couldn’t get over Wang Wenying once being with Kang Jian, and the child’s existence only deepened your jealousy and resentment. That’s why you often went to bars and KTVs, using these means to retaliate against Wang Wenying, even going so far as to kill your own son. Ultimately, you are just a narrow-minded, selfish guy." Zhao Donglai pressed on, continuing his reprimand.
"Enough!" Suddenly, Zeng Tianming roared, glaring daggers at Zhao Donglai.
"These things, Wang Wenying must have told you! No doubt. Who else would know these things besides her?" Zeng Tianming ground his teeth in fury.
"But why would Wang Wenying do this to me? Isn’t my becoming like this all because of her? I once cared so much about her; I was willing to give my life for her, even accept someone else’s child and marry her. But what about her? Her heart has always been with that scumbag who abandoned her."
"I thought time would make her slowly forget Kang Jian, that she would gradually fall in love with me. But when Kang Jian reappeared, all Wang Wenying saw was him. I really can’t understand what makes me inferior to that scumbag Kang Jian. He was the one who abandoned and hurt her, yet she can’t forget him. It makes me feel so much pain and anger."
"What made me even angrier is that Wang Wenying hid things from me, secretly contacting that scumbag Kang Jian, even having coffee together. Did she think I didn’t know? I knew everything, but I loved her too much. Even knowing that, I couldn’t bear to leave her. I loved her so much; I just hated that bastard Kang Jian."
"I hated Kang Jian. Yes, I killed Xiaoguang. I didn’t want to kill him, but he looked too much like that scumbag Kang Jian. Every time I saw him, I couldn’t help but think of Kang Jian with Wang Wenying. Then Yang Cheng and Zhou Zhi set me up to extort fifty thousand, which pushed me to think about killing Xiaoguang."
"Honestly, Wang Wenying should bear at least half the responsibility for me ending up like this," Zeng Tianming angrily expressed, as though venting all his pent-up frustrations.
Under Zhao Donglai’s continuous questioning, Zeng Tianming also described the details of the crime. On that Saturday, he did go to the city, but returned before two o’clock. After crossing Yunnv Street and passing Ma River, he parked his car, then hitched a ride to Ningjiang County.
He picked up the child in an alley where Zeng Xiaoguang usually passed after school, claiming to take him swimming. To avoid being seen, Zeng Tianming chose to take the back-mountain path to Dragon Beard Creek with the child.
He brought the child to the pond area of Dragon Beard Creek, a place not usually frequented by many.
When the child excitedly stripped his clothes and swam into the pond, Zeng Tianming looked around. Seeing no one nearby, he had Zeng Xiaoguang swim over to him. The child never imagined his own father would kill him, so he happily swam over.
Zeng Tianming pretended to pat the child’s head and then violently pushed it underwater. The child struggled desperately to surface, but a nine-year-old’s strength couldn’t match an adult’s.
Before long, the child became completely still.
Once certain the child was really dead, Zeng Tianming hurriedly left the scene. He then went to the roadside, hailed a taxi to leave the county, returned to Ma River, then drove his own car back to Ningjiang County.
