Luo Fei stared at Cheng Wei, this guy reacted quickly, knowing well that the police could easily confirm Zhao Yi’s pregnancy, so he directly confessed that he lied to Lin Gang.
"After knowing Lin Gang killed your father, you not only didn’t think about reporting Lin Gang to the police, but you even wanted to help Lin Gang escape the law’s punishment. Does this mean you have no feelings for your father at all?" Luo Fei asked Cheng Wei sternly.
Cheng Wei shook his head, "Not at all, my relationship with my father was good. After learning that my father was accidentally killed by Lin Gang, I was immensely grief-stricken. He was the father who gave me life and raised me, and he was my only relative in this world."
"I thought about reporting Lin Gang to the police, but what would that accomplish? Catching Lin Gang wouldn’t bring my father back, he’s gone for good. And Lin Gang is my good friend; he went to steal money because I told him to. In some ways, it was my fault that led to this tragedy, so I bear significant responsibility."
"After thinking for a long time, I gave up the idea of reporting Lin Gang. Of course, I also feared that if the police really caught Lin Gang, his confession would implicate me. After all, my father is gone, but I still have to live; Xiaoyi is still waiting for me, I can’t let anything happen to me, I can’t let Xiaoyi lose me and live alone."
Cheng Wei’s explanation was impeccable; it was clear he had planned it long ago. Luo Fei didn’t believe Cheng Wei could come up with such a complete argument on the spot.
"You’re lying. We’ve learned that your relationship with your father wasn’t good?" Luo Fei asked coldly.
"That’s a misunderstanding by outsiders; our father-son relationship was good, just not openly displayed," Cheng Wei explained.
Luo Fei didn’t ask further. He knew that in the current situation, no further questioning would yield any answers. He gave Cheng Wei a cold look and then called Sun Jun to leave.
Very quickly, Luo Fei and Sun Jun both left the interrogation room.
Outside the interrogation room, Zhao Donglai and Zhang Fan, the leader of the second group, were both present.
"Captain Zhao, this guy is very calm and cunning. Without solid evidence, I think it’s hard to make him tell the truth," Luo Fei reported to Zhao Donglai.
Zhao Donglai frowned. He had also seen the situation in the interrogation room just now. This Cheng Wei seemed calm and smart, truly a difficult person to deal with.
"Regarding the murder of Cheng Zhiyou, it seems from beginning to end Cheng Wei only got Lin Gang to steal money, plus some coincidences in timing, resulting in this seamless murder. Cheng Wei didn’t do anything else, making it look entirely accidental. I think it’s tough to find evidence of Cheng Wei’s murder unless he admits it himself," Zhang Fan said, his face full of seriousness.
Luo Fei didn’t speak. Given the current circumstances, it must be said that Cheng Wei’s use of an accident to kill Cheng Zhiwei is indeed a clever approach. Finding evidence in this situation is really difficult. But did Cheng Wei really do nothing besides getting Lin Gang to steal money?
"It’s indeed difficult, but no matter how difficult, we must solve it. Our criminal police creed is ’no murder case goes unsolved’ and ’never letting any bad person go,’" Zhao Donglai said resolutely. Then he turned to Luo Fei and Zhang Fan, "You two go, think carefully about how to investigate this case, and at twelve o’clock, we’ll convene a temporary meeting in the conference room to gather everyone for further discussion."
"Yes."
"Yes."
Zhang Fan and Luo Fei nodded.
Luo Fei came out of the interrogation room and went straight back to the third group’s office.
In the office, Sun Jun and the others were discussing the case.
"This is really difficult. Apart from Cheng Wei instigating Lin Gang to steal money, the case of Cheng Zhiyou’s murder seems entirely accidental. How can we possibly find evidence?" Wang Yong said, looking frustrated.
"Exactly! How can we find evidence? It’s really tough to find it." Zhaocheng echoed.
Sun Jun said, "There can’t be a perfect murder; if it’s murder, there will undoubtedly be evidence. We just haven’t discovered it yet."
Luo Fei agreed with Sun Jun’s statement. There can’t be an unblemished murder; if it’s murder, clues will definitely be left behind.
"Leader."
"Leader."
Seeing Luo Fei enter, Sun Jun and the others greeted him one by one.
"Alright, everyone come over. Captain Zhao is going to have a temporary meeting at twelve for case analysis. Let’s first have a brief internal meeting in our group." Luo Fei headed towards the case analysis board.
Luo Fei wiped the blackboard clean, and Sun Jun and the others came over.
"Let’s organize our thoughts now."
"First point, let’s initially assume Cheng Wei is the murderer of Cheng Zhiwei?" Luo Fei said, writing ’Cheng Wei - murderer’ on the blackboard, and then writing ’motive’ and ’conditions for the murder’ beside it.
"Secondly, it’s about motive. Why did the murderer want to kill Cheng Zhiyou? They were father and son; what hatred existed between them?"
"Additionally, what conditions did the murderer set up to implement their murder plan?" Luo Fei pointed at the blackboard and continuously asked.
"We don’t know the murder motive, but the murder conditions are clear: first, getting Lin Gang to go into the room to steal money, second, Cheng Zhiyou coincidentally returning while Lin Gang was stealing," Sun Jun replied.
"There are two problems here. First, how did Cheng Wei ensure that Cheng Zhiyou would return at the exact time Lin Gang was stealing? It’s important to know that from the moment Lin Gang entered the room, went to the bedroom to find money, and came out, all of this took at most ten minutes. How could Cheng Wei guarantee Cheng Zhiyou would return within those ten minutes?" Luo Fei asked.
