The first light of dawn

Chapter 903 She Was Just Too Tired

Jiang Nuan told Mu Jiuchen about encountering the man in black earlier.

Mu Jiuchen held her tightly, his handsome face contorted with immense pain.

Guilt, anger, and heartache intertwined within him.

"Why?" Mu Jiuchen roared in fury. "Why does something always happen to you right under my nose, and I remain oblivious? I'm so useless, always letting you suffer."

Mu Jiuchen was in extreme agony. He had only come ahead to drop off some items.

In just a fleeting moment, she had been harmed.

Jiang Nuan felt his pain and patted his back, forcing a relaxed smile. "Husband, it's okay. I can handle it. Take me back first."

Mu Jiuchen helped her into the car, and this time, he drove directly back to the Lu family residence.

If he hadn't been so stubborn about wanting some alone time with her earlier, Nuan Nuan wouldn't have experienced this. It was all his fault.

Mu Jiuchen's expression was unusually calm and composed.

He drove, delivering Jiang Nuan back to the Lu family. While waiting at a red light, he dispatched Xiao Fan to track down the man's whereabouts. He had lost him last time; now that he had reappeared, Mu Jiuchen was determined to find him.

By the time they returned home, Li Qing Shuo and the others had already left.

The living room was empty. Mu Jiuchen took Jiang Nuan directly to the pharmacy.

She was soaked in sweat, leaning weakly against him.

He gently held her shoulders, gazing at her with heartache, and said softly, "Wife, we're here."

Jiang Nuan pointed to the medicine cabinet. "Open the medicine box."

She was experiencing alternating chills and fever, her will seemingly under some sort of control. She felt an urge to scream, to yell, to smash things. The impulse to erupt was almost unbearable.

But she was suppressing it with all her might.

Mu Jiuchen quickly opened the medicine box.

Jiang Nuan looked over and said, "Husband, there's a bottle of white liquid. Take it out, and then get a silver needle."

Mu Jiuchen quickly complied, handing her the items she needed.

Jiang Nuan took the needle and pricked her finger forcefully. A drop of dark red blood fell into the white liquid. She then connected the data to the computer.

Her equipment here was comprehensive, and the blood analysis was fast.

Soon, a string of data appeared on the computer screen, which Mu Jiuchen couldn't understand.

Jiang Nuan quickly scanned it. Upon understanding, she was shocked.

"Heh..." she sneered, feeling disgusted at the thought of the toxins in her body. "This contains animal gene extracts, designed to make me enraged and live like a beast. It affects my strength, speed, and demeanor, turning me into a wild animal."

Mu Jiuchen: "..."

"It was him!" he recalled the message Lu Jincheng had sent him.

That night, the target was Lu Jinyan. Now, it had shifted to Nuan Nuan.

"Who?" Jiang Nuan asked weakly, looking at him.

Mu Jiuchen took out his phone and showed her a video. "Nuan Nuan, this man planned to attack Third Brother a few days ago. I was there that night, so he didn't get a chance. But I never dreamed he would shift his target to you."

The more Mu Jiuchen thought about it, the angrier he became. He had thought they would be safe after capturing Mu Yun Feng and his son, but danger still lurked everywhere.

Jiang Nuan recognized the man in the video as the same one she had encountered in the parking lot that evening.

Jiang Nuan returned the phone to him. She rested on the table for a moment before saying, "Husband, please get the HN2 agent from the refrigerator for me."

Mu Jiuchen gently persuaded her, "Wife, let's go to the hospital. The medical team I previously recruited is stationed in Modu. It's time for them to serve us."

Jiang Nuan shook her head and said with a wry smile, "This isn't a deadly poison. Go get the agent for me. That agent can counteract the poison. Do you remember the information from the C.H. Biological Research Institute you brought back? I saw this research project in it, and I've already prepared a countermeasure. There are two doses of HN2 agent in the refrigerator. Once I take that, I'll be fine."

Jiang Nuan seemed to understand the other party's intention.

It was a test to see if she had the ability to resolve this poison.

Mu Jiuchen turned to the small refrigerator in the corner, opened it, found the agent, and quickly took it out. He opened the bottle cap and carefully fed it to her.

It was then that he noticed the many scratches on the back of her hand.

She had harmed herself because she couldn't bear the pain.

Mu Jiuchen's pupils trembled, and he held her tightly, asking softly into her ear, "Wife, does it still hurt?"

Jiang Nuan gripped his waist tightly, her grip immense, yet Mu Jiuchen didn't even flinch.

The wave of pain that hit Jiang Nuan was fierce. The enraged factor within her body was breaking free, making it almost unbearable.

Fortunately, the medicine took effect quickly, and the pain in her body gradually subsided.

After about five more minutes, Jiang Nuan slowly let go of Mu Jiuchen.

He lowered his gaze, his bloodshot eyes filled with concern as he looked at her.

Jiang Nuan, however, gave him a gentle smile. Her pale face looked even more frail, but her smile was radiant and captivating, enchanting. "I'm fine now. Don't you trust your wife?"

He did trust her, but he feared she wasn't telling him the whole truth.

Her dishonesty often led him to wild imaginations.

He picked her up and carried her to the room, saying softly as they walked, "As long as you tell me the truth, I believe you."

Jiang Nuan gave a bitter smile and remained silent.

She fell asleep peacefully in his arms.

...

The next morning, at ten o'clock.

"Knock knock..."

Mu Jiuchen looked at his wife, who had not yet woken up on the bed. He numbly stood up and opened the door. Seeing Jin Yan, who had returned, at the door, he softly called out, "Mom!"

Jin Yan looked at his haggard face and was greatly alarmed. "Xiao Jiu, what's wrong? Why do you look so unwell?"

Mu Jiuchen lowered his gaze, remaining silent.

Jin Yan was suddenly startled, pushed him aside, and rushed inside. Seeing her daughter lying motionless on the bed, she collapsed onto the edge of the bed.

"Nuan Nuan," she called out, tears welling up.

Jiang Nuan on the bed showed no reaction. Jin Yan cried out anxiously, "Nuan Nuan, Mom is back. Open your eyes and look at your mother, please!"

Jiang Nuan remained unresponsive. Perhaps hearing her mother's heartbroken cries, tears also welled up in Jiang Nuan's eyes and flowed down her cheeks to behind her ears, yet she still did not wake up.

Jin Yan looked at Mu Jiuchen, who followed her in, and grabbed his hand, asking agitatedly, "Xiao Jiu, what's wrong with my daughter?"

Mu Jiuchen explained softly, "Nuan Nuan will wake up. She's just very tired."

He did not reveal that Jiang Nuan had been injected with an unknown toxin.

He knew his mother-in-law had a weak constitution. He helped Jin Yan up.

Jin Yan looked at him worriedly, her face streaked with tears and concern. She confirmed again, "Xiao Jiu, is Nuan Nuan really just sleeping? Nothing will happen, right?"

"Yes! She also said she would prepare an antidote for Mom today. Nothing will happen." He knew Jiang Nuan was fine; she was just sleeping. He tried to convince himself of this.

Jin Yan looked at her daughter again. Seeing the trace of tears on her fair, silk-like face, she was stunned. Her voice trembling, she asked, "Xiao Jiu, are you really sure Nuan Nuan is just sleeping? Then why is she only shedding tears and not waking up?"
