Chapter 4 Guarding Through the Night

Lan Yan propped her head up, gazing at the unconscious person on the bed, and sighed, "He's had it too rough." Jun Yelan had been abandoned since childhood, surviving as a beggar in the marketplace, even fighting wild dogs for scraps.

He finally grew up and joined the army, fighting for ten years on the battlefield. With his intelligence and strategic mind, he managed to rise to the position of general, earning him the title of God of War from outsiders.

However, it was precisely this success that bred jealousy. During a battle, he was betrayed by his subordinates, his martial arts were crippled, and he fell off a cliff. After barely clinging to life, he was found by human traffickers and then purchased by the original owner to be a slave.

Thinking about it, his life truly held no moments of joy.

The system, seeing Lan Yan growing disheartened, encouraged her, "Host, this is precisely why you are here. As your system, I believe you can do it. System entering maintenance..."

Lan Yan: "..." She felt something was amiss but couldn't quite pinpoint it.

However, since she had arrived here, she was determined to complete her mission, especially for the person she was currently tending to. Once the medicine was ready, she picked up the bowl and fed him spoonful by spoonful.

Fortunately, Jun Yelan's survival instinct was strong, and he automatically swallowed, saving her a lot of trouble.

After he finished the medicine, she picked up the ointment and meticulously applied it to Jun Yelan's wounds. Seeing him frown in his sleep, she slowed her movements, gently spreading the balm.

By the time she finished applying the medicine, she was already drenched in sweat.

But she dared not leave, fearing Jun Yelan's condition would worsen, so she stayed by his bedside. The sky outside darkened, and her eyelids grew heavy. She dozed off with her head on the bed.

She woke up once in the middle of the night, felt Jun Yelan's forehead, and found his fever had broken. A smile touched her lips. She murmured, "You must get well." Then, she fell back asleep.

The next morning, the early morning sunlight streamed in through the window, illuminating the bedside. Jun Yelan on the bed slowly opened his eyes, his mind still hazy.

He rubbed his head. Last night, it felt like someone had been feeding him medicine and talking to him. The feeling was gentle, something he had never experienced.

He gave a self-deprecating smile; someone like him shouldn't have such moments. Just then, he heard movement by the bed and turned his head, only to see Lan Yan asleep beside him.

And he was sleeping in Lan Yan's bed.

What was going on! A flicker of surprise crossed his expressionless face, and then he fixed his gaze on Lan Yan. At such close proximity, he could easily reach out, grab her neck, and snap it.

But he looked at his own wrists; it was impossible for him now. He could only stare at Lan Yan, watching her peaceful sleeping face, which surprisingly held a touch of beauty.

He must be going mad. He quickly turned his head away.

Lan Yan also woke up, her first instinct being to check Jun Yelan's forehead. Seeing him staring blankly, she recalled the events of yesterday and explained, "I was just checking if your fever had returned! I absolutely had no other intentions."

She was practically swearing to it. Seeing that Jun Yelan wasn't angry this time, the corners of her mouth couldn't help but curve upwards.

But this smile held a different meaning in Jun Yelan's eyes.

Lan Yan, not noticing Jun Yelan's change, called out towards the door, "Chun Tao, prepare meals for two, some light congee will be fine."

As the words left her mouth, not only Jun Yelan but also Chun Tao looked surprised. Everyone knew Lan Yan never ate with others.
