The night was silent.

Chapter 4 Palpitations

Seeing the pale face of the woman in white, her dark, empty eyes, and her eerie laughter.

It felt as if an invisible boulder was pressing down on my heart, making it difficult to breathe.

My lips trembled uncontrollably, my mind a blank slate.

I became even more certain that this woman was not human at all.

I was truly being haunted by something unclean.

Terrified, I had only one thought.

To flee this place quickly, to escape this female ghost.

To leave this creepy, dilapidated place as soon as possible.

I ran forward, gasping for air, looking utterly disheveled.

As I ran past an intersection, I glanced back.

The shadowless woman was not pursuing me. She merely stood facing me, still in her original position.

Her pale complexion, coupled with her white dress.

She was so conspicuous in the darkness.

Seeing that she wasn't chasing me.

My heart eased slightly, but I dared not stop running.

"Thump, thump, thump…"

In the dimly lit alley, only my heavy footsteps and my ragged breaths could be heard.

It was an oppressive atmosphere.

I didn't dare to stop, and in this narrow alley, I was even more afraid to look back.

Nervous and frightened, I ran forward frantically…

By the time I reached the building of my rental unit, I was exhausted, panting, and drenched in sweat.

Seeing two drunken residents chatting arm in arm, I finally dared to look back again.

The space behind me was empty.

Nothing but the dim streetlights, the branches swaying in the night wind with their "rustling" sounds, and no sign of the woman in white following me.

I let out a long sigh, feeling a little more at ease.

I quickly ran up to the fourth floor and entered my room.

I locked the door securely, double-checking.

After turning on all the lights in the room, I slowly sat down on the sofa, feeling much more relaxed.

But I remained sensitive, glancing towards the door and the balcony from time to time.

Monitoring and sensing everything in the room, afraid that something might suddenly jump out.

Before experiencing this, I always thought I was very brave.

Only now did I realize that it wasn't the case.

I was afraid of ghosts, and even more afraid of death…

However, after returning today.

The strange feeling of being watched that I had in the past few days had disappeared.

But recalling tonight's encounter still left me with lingering fear.

The shadowless woman, the bizarre sensation of my clothes being pulled, the near-fatal encounter with the truck, and brushing shoulders with death.

The strangest part was that tugging sensation from behind.

If not for that pull, I would have definitely been crushed to death by the dump truck.

But at that moment, besides the shadowless woman, there was no one else around.

Could it be that because she accepted my copper coin, she saved me?

But she was more than ten meters away from me at the time…

I couldn't figure it out, let alone confirm it.

But if that were the case.

It would mean that this matter might have been resolved.

With this thought, the gloom that had been weighing on my heart was finally lifted.

A long-lost gentle smile bloomed on my face.

After a while, I washed up and went to bed.

This was the most peaceful night's sleep I had in a month.

I slept until dawn, even indulging in a lazy lie-in.

After getting up, I felt much more energetic.

The groggy feeling from the previous days was gone.

Looking in the mirror, my face had regained some color, and my dark circles had faded slightly.

I was secretly pleased.

It seemed the copper coin given by the middle-aged man from logistics had worked.

I resolved to thank him properly when I saw him at work today.

Thinking this, I changed into my work clothes.

And prepared to go out for something to eat, and then head to my night shift.

However, the moment I opened the door with a relaxed expression.

A dull gray copper coin fell through the gap in the door with two soft thuds.

It rolled in a half-circle on the ground, finally coming to a stop at my feet.

And the instant I saw the coin.

My pupils dilated, and my calm, relaxed expression froze.

I stood there, completely still.

After several seconds, I finally regained my composure.

Trembling, I picked up the copper coin.

The moment it touched my hand, I shivered all over.

The coin was as cold as if it had been frozen in a refrigerator for over ten hours, chilling me to the bone.

What was most astonishing was.

This copper coin was the exact same one I had given to the shadowless woman last night.

I remembered every detail on it.

But besides these details, the reverse side of the coin was stained with a small amount of blood.

How did this coin get here? Why was it stained with blood? How did it get stuck in the door?

A bad premonition began to spread through my heart once more.

I became anxious and fearful all over again.

What was going on? Why was this happening?

I kept asking myself.

But at this point, there seemed to be only one possible explanation.

That woman in white, she didn't want to let me go.

She returned the copper coin, she was the one who shoved it through the door crack, and she still wanted to haunt me.

What did she want? Didn't want money, wanted me dead?

My back chilled, and I stood frozen at the doorway in horror for a long while.

Finally, I put away the copper coin and hurried downstairs.

Although I was terrified, I also understood.

The only person who could help me now was the middle-aged man from the logistics department.

To get rid of the shadowless woman, I had to seek his help again…
