Chapter 23 Beyond Saving

"Who is this lying here, are they dead!"

Hearing Lu Danian's cry, Huangfu Yue frowned slightly and immediately stopped the carriage.

"Grandmother, I'll go ahead and see who is lying there," Huangfu Yue said to Consort Dowager Zheng.

Consort Dowager Zheng nodded, "Go ahead."

Before Consort Dowager Zheng finished speaking, Huangfu Yue had already jumped off the carriage and walked briskly towards the front.

Soon, Huangfu Yue arrived at the front and saw Lu Danian, Feng Maoyuan, and two other constables surrounding a person.

"County Princess." One of the constables saw Huangfu Yue and immediately bowed respectfully.

Hearing his subordinate's voice, Feng Maoyuan immediately turned around. Upon seeing Huangfu Yue, he also bowed respectfully to her and then reported, "County Princess, there is a severely injured man lying here. I just checked him. He has been stabbed multiple times and has lost a lot of blood. He is barely breathing. We don't know who he is."

Huangfu Yue stepped forward and looked at the man lying on the ground. He had several stab wounds, and most of his clothes were stained with blood. His face was as pale as paper, and his eyes were tightly closed.

He can't be saved!

Huangfu Yue glanced at the man's brow. His brow had no trace of blood.

According to her experience, as long as the Mingtang, which is the brow, still has a trace of color, there is still a chance to save him.

Suddenly, the man opened his eyes. Seeing Huangfu Yue and the others, he immediately moved his lips, struggling to open his mouth and utter a sound...

"Help... help..." The man was too weak to speak. After much effort, he could only utter two words, "Help...".

"I'm sorry, your injuries are too severe, you cannot be saved." Huangfu Yue thought he wanted to beg them for help, and gently shook her head.

"No... I want to ask you to help me deliver a letter to the Liu residence in the capital..."

The man used all his strength to finally say one sentence, but this sentence not only exhausted his entire strength but also his last bit of life. After speaking, his eyes closed.

He's dead! Huangfu Yue frowned.

"Why did this man die before he could finish speaking!" Lu Danian also frowned.

"We don't even know which Liu residence in the capital he wanted us to deliver the letter to. There are so many families named Liu in the capital," Lu Danian's face flickered with curiosity.

"It doesn't matter. Even if we knew which Liu residence in the capital it was, we wouldn't be able to deliver the letter for him," Feng Maoyuan said.

Huangfu Yue nodded. They couldn't help this man deliver the letter.

"County Princess, I think we should just leave him be. Let's continue our journey," Feng Maoyuan said.

"Mm." Huangfu Yue nodded again.

They didn't know who the deceased was, nor could they bury him carelessly. They could only let him lie there for now.

This official road had people coming and going. Soon, other pedestrians would pass by. They would discover that this man was dead and report it to the authorities. When the officials arrived, they would help collect his body. So, they didn't need to worry about him.

"Let's continue. You go ahead, I'll go back and drive the carriage," Huangfu Yue said to Feng Maoyuan.

"Yes." Feng Maoyuan immediately agreed.

Huangfu Yue turned and walked towards the back. Before she could reach the carriage, she was stopped by her sisters-in-law, including Xu Yujing.

"Yue'er, what happened ahead?" Xu Yujing asked.

"I just heard that person surnamed Lu shout that someone was lying ahead. Who is it?" Zhong Liangshu asked.

Although Zhu Jiayi did not speak, like her sisters-in-law, she was full of curiosity, staring intently at Huangfu Yue, waiting for her answer.

"A man died ahead. Don't mind him, let's continue our journey," Huangfu Yue replied.

"Ah! A man died! How scary!"

Upon hearing Huangfu Yue's words, Yang Wanqian, who was always timid and was in the carriage behind, immediately cried out in fear.

"I wonder who that man was?" Xu Yujing also showed a frightened expression.

"It's just that someone died! Don't make a fuss. No matter who he is, it has nothing to do with us. Don't forget our current identities. Mind your own business and continue on your way," Consort Dowager Zheng said.

Hearing Consort Dowager Zheng's stern voice, Yang Wanqian and the others all fell silent and dared not say anything more.

Huangfu Yue returned to the carriage and urged the horses forward.

As they passed by the corpse of the dead man, Huangfu Yue's sisters-in-law, who were seeing a dead person for the first time, and a few children were very scared and did not dare to look.

Consort Dowager Zheng, however, was not afraid at all. She lifted the carriage curtain and examined the man's corpse. When she saw the man's face, Consort Dowager Zheng narrowed her eyes slightly.

This face looked a bit familiar, as if she had seen it somewhere...
