Meng Jingwei, usually resilient, rarely showed such pain in front of Qing Muye. Seeing her tremble with agony sent pangs of heartbreak through him, leaving his mind in disarray.
Exiting the elevator, he ran towards the sedan with Meng Jingwei in his arms. She wasn't heavy, yet Qing Muye felt his arms ache.
He was afraid of hurting her if he held too tightly, and afraid of dropping her if he held too loosely, so he maintained a strained posture.
Once she was in the car and placed in the back seat, Qing Muye held Meng Jingwei's hand and urged, "Awei, hold on a little longer..."
With that, he circled around to the driver's seat and drove away.
The sedan moved quickly yet was remarkably smooth, all because Meng Jingwei was lying in the back.
As it neared midnight, the roads were sparse with vehicles, allowing for an unimpeded journey. He ran through three red lights before reaching the hospital.
Pulling over, Qing Muye hastily got out, not even bothering to close the driver's side door. He immediately went to the back seat and lifted Meng Jingwei out.
"Awei? Awei?"
He leaned into the car and held her, only to discover she had already fainted.
Qing Muye's heart skipped a beat. He swallowed nervously and immediately rushed her to the emergency room, "Doctor? Doctor, please save my wife, quickly!"
In his urgency, the word 'wife' slipped out.
Perhaps, in Qing Muye's heart, Meng Jingwei was already his wife, only the marriage certificate was missing.
The doctor on duty approached upon hearing him, "What happened?"
"My wife is pregnant. She accidentally hit her stomach just now and fainted from the pain," Qing Muye explained briefly.
"Oh dear, how could she be so careless? Quick, quickly get her inside."
The doctor led Qing Muye into the emergency room, telling him to place Meng Jingwei on the bed and then instructing him, "You go pay and register her quickly."
Qing Muye glanced at Meng Jingwei with concern several times. "Okay, okay..."
He agreed verbally, but his body remained stiffly in place, staring at Meng Jingwei lying on the bed, showing no intention of leaving.
Seeing this, a nurse nudged him out, "Sir, the doctor needs to examine the patient. Please step outside."
He was pushed and ushered out of the emergency room. Watching the emergency room door shut with a bang, blocking his view, he finally withdrew his gaze and his thoughts returned.
Qing Muye stood stunned for a few seconds, instinctively reaching for his cigarette case, pulling out a cigarette and placing it between his lips, then fumbling for his lighter.
With a click, the lighter ignited. The man then lowered his head, bringing the cigarette tip towards the flame.
His mind was a chaotic mess, the hand holding the lighter trembling uncontrollably. He raised his left hand, intending to steady his trembling right hand, and suddenly his gaze froze, his pupils locking onto his left hand...
On his left hand, as if appearing from nowhere, was a coating of crimson blood.
His body stiffened, and the lighter slipped from his palm. He stared blankly at the still-wet bloodstains in his hand, his face turning even paler.
After regaining some composure, he went to register and pay for Meng Jingwei. He watched as Meng Jingwei was taken into the operating room, and then he waited anxiously outside the operating room.
Tap, tap, tap—
Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the quiet corridor. Qing Muye, who had been silently smoking, turned his head slightly and saw several people emerging from the elevator, running towards them.
The arrivals were Han Yu, Tang Si, Shi Ran, and Yun Shasha.
Yun Shasha, knowing she was in trouble, was terrified. After calming down, she called Han Yu.
Han Yu, thinking Tang Si, a doctor, might be able to help, contacted Tang Si.
Upon receiving the call, Tang Si exclaimed in the living room, "You say Little Pepper hit her stomach? She's pregnant now! Is Yun Shasha that idiotic fool trying to die?"
His voice alerted Shi Ran in the bedroom. Out of concern, Shi Ran came out of the bedroom to ask Tang Si what was happening. Tang Si truthfully informed her, and Shi Ran, worried about Meng Jingwei, also came along.
