My first time traveling by road to the capital, the road conditions were anything but easy. Fortunately, Young Master Wu had sent the trucks ahead; given the terrain, it would be difficult to reach the designated location on schedule.
The rebel leader, surnamed Zhang, was of Chinese descent, this generation being the fourth, and he had completely integrated into Burmese society.
He harbored great ambition, always wanting to ascend to the highest power in Myanmar, but his foreign ethnicity had become his greatest obstacle. Within the military government, he was isolated and had always been suppressed by the majority of native officers. Despite leading the largest armed force under the government, he still had little say.
Therefore, the path through parliament and elections was simply not viable, which is why he raised the banner of rebellion.
Our purpose in going was to find a way to open a breach and get those politicians out of danger.
Just us few people, we wouldn't even be enough to fill a gap in their teeth.
They had a full army blockading the headquarters, so tight that not even a fly could get in.
Although there were reinforcements waiting to engage outside the perimeter, the disparity in troop numbers, weaponry, and combat effectiveness was too great. They could only remain in safe zones and watch helplessly.
The vehicles sped along the extremely bumpy road. Fortunately, it was a large Land Cruiser with excellent shock absorption, so the vibrations transmitted into the cabin were not very pronounced, though we could hear abnormal noises from beneath the chassis.
When we reached about a third of the way, we caught up with the convoy.
We overtook them and took the lead for the convoy.
The vehicles shuttled through the rugged mountain roads, with much further to go. No one even had time to stop for a meal or to use the restroom, let alone rest.
My two mobile phones lost signal beneath the vehicle, but luckily we had a satellite phone to communicate with the outside world.
I took out my phone, checked the time, it was 4:30 PM. We had covered just over a third of the journey, and we expected to arrive between 11 PM and midnight.
I dialed Bo Gang's number.
Bo Gang anxiously asked where I was. I told him we were about three hundred kilometers away, and it would take at least another six to seven hours to arrive.
He said that artillery shells were continuously landing within the government compound, and the situation was extremely critical. Because all the troops were strictly guarding inside the walls, they wouldn't launch a major offensive during the day, but they would definitely make a move tonight.
I said, "Have you thought of a plan?"
Bo Gang replied, "Once you arrive, first establish yourselves in a safe zone, then I will tell you the specific location. There is an underground passage, and the rebels are guarding the entrance outside. Your mission is to eliminate the personnel guarding the passage. Currently, I don't know how many troops they have deployed or if there are any gaps with the other surrounding forces. This will require reconnaissance once you arrive before making specific deployment plans."
I said okay, and we would discuss it upon arrival.
The sky had already darkened. Wen Siqiang said that as we were approaching Yangon, the roads ahead were relatively flatter and easier to navigate.
Indeed, after driving for another few dozen kilometers, we finally reached a paved road resembling an official highway.
After getting onto the asphalt road, the vehicle's speed increased significantly.
I checked the time; it was nearly 8 PM, with over two hundred kilometers still to go.
With roads like these, we should arrive by 11 PM if nothing unexpected happens.
The trucks, most noticeably, greatly increased their speed, following us closely.
All the troops we organized were special forces, direct subordinates of Young Master Wu, highly trained with comprehensive skills. Executing a mission like this was more than sufficient for them.
I told Young Master Wu that we had plenty of time now. Once we saw a more open area, we should let everyone rest for a bit and have something to eat.
