It was only around five in the afternoon, and the light was already so dim that everything in sight appeared blurred, with no lamps to be seen.
When faced with an environment he couldn't see clearly, he instinctively reached out for something beside the handrail, but the wall was pitch black, and the railing on his left was equally dark. He dared not touch them.
Every hair on his body seemed to stand on end as he followed her upstairs.
It wasn't just the two of them scrambling for luggage; people from other dorm rooms were doing the same.
It was only now that Zhan Jingrui realized that male and female employees were all housed on the same floor.
When they encountered each other, they greeted one another and shared updates about their rooms.
By the time he arrived, He Yao had already entered the room. Luo Jia, seeing him follow, pushed her suitcase towards him.
"Oh, you came up too. Since you're here, help me carry a suitcase downstairs. Hurry. The water in the room is about to overflow. If we wait any longer, my suitcase won't be saved either."
As her roommate, not only did she not help clean up when He Yao hadn't returned, but she was actually ordering her friend who had brought her back around?
What kind of person was she?
Zhan Jingrui ignored her and moved to the side to look for He Yao.
He went from room to room, until he saw He Yao's figure, and he was stunned.
A layer of yellow sewage, reeking foully, floated on the dorm floor, flowing over the threshold and out.
Many messy objects floated on the surface of the water.
Zhan Jingrui dared not look further. One glance was enough to make his stomach churn with disgust, and he turned his gaze away.
Fortunately, He Yao lived on the upper bunk, and her clothes were all folded neatly in the wardrobe, so there wasn't much loss.
Sensing someone at the doorway, she turned and saw it was Zhan Jingrui.
Knowing he was a germaphobe, He Yao quickly said,
"Didn't I tell you not to come up? Why did you still come? I'll be done packing soon. You don't need to help. You go down first."
"The water is overflowing from the toilet, it's very dirty and full of bacteria. Don't get your clothes dirty."
Upon hearing this, Zhan Jingrui, suppressing his nausea, turned his face back.
"I know the water is overflowing from the toilet and it's very dirty. You still want these things? Just get rid of them. Come out quickly."
Although the clothes weren't very expensive, they were accumulated over many years. If she were to throw them all away without keeping any, it would cost a significant amount of money to replace them.
He Yao couldn't bear to do that.
"They're not dirty, they can still be worn after washing. You go down quickly, your shoes are already getting dirty."
"No!"
Zhan Jingrui felt an uncomfortable sensation on his feet and couldn't stay a second longer. He frowned at her.
"Just leave them. If you take them down, I won't let you put them in the car! Come down now!"
He Yao paused in her actions. After a few seconds of looking at him, she suddenly lost the desire to pack.
He couldn't understand her impoverished situation, and she couldn't possibly reach his wealth.
In that regard, they had been absurd from the beginning. Why should she still hold onto any illusions?
"I won't put them in your car. Luo Jia, if you want to give her a ride, do so. If not, kick her out. Thank you again for giving me a ride back today. You can go now."
Zhan Jingrui felt like his day would never end.
He was going to be angered to death by her.
What made her think she was so noble, worthy of him making such an effort for her?
Did she think he was shameless for coming back to her again and again?
He really wanted to just leave.
But then he thought of the heavy rain outside.
Gritting his teeth and holding his breath, he quickened his steps and rushed into the room. To He Yao's surprise, he quickly moved in front of her.
He grabbed her wrist, pulled her to the edge of the bed, and then swept her up in a bridal carry.
He Yao was stunned by his series of actions, her hands instinctively wrapping around his neck.
Looking at his familiar yet strange profile up close, her heart pounded rapidly.
She wondered, what was he doing? Had he broken up with Chu Xi? Did he still have feelings for her? Otherwise, after so many years, why would he still be so good to her?
