Chapter 197: James' Gift

"What the…" Sirius stared at the gigantic box that was covered in hundreds of small drawers. "How many did you make?"

"This container should have enough supply for the next fifty years." James took out one of the potions. "But that is not the important part."

Remus was about to make a comment on how ridiculous and exaggerated this amount of potions was, but then he noticed the vial that James was holding and found it very strange. "The color has changed." The one he had been taking so far had a vibrant blue color, but this one was deep purple.

James glanced at the vial. "Mmm… true, the color is different. Although the effects are more interesting than that. As I said, this is an improved version."

"It's better than the one I have been taking?" Remus had a hard time imagining that.

"If it works as intended, this one will completely suppress the transformation," James revealed, shocking his friends.

"He won't even transform if he takes that?" Peter asked.

"How can that be?" Remus stared at James in disbelief.

"You'll have a chance to test it very soon. Next week is the full moon," James said. "Unfortunately, school will have ended by then, so I won't have the chance to see its efficacy in person. But I want you to try it and send me a letter the next day and tell me how it went."

"Wouldn't suppressing the transformation mean that he is pretty much cured?" Sirius asked.

"There is no cure for this curse, as far as I can tell. But for as long as he takes one of these on every full moon day, Remus will no longer have to worry about the werewolf," James said.

"When did you come up with this?" Peter asked.

"Well, I had the idea for a while. Just got around to making it after that thing with the witch," James responded.

"James… I don't know what to say." Remus was truly moved.

"A thank you would do," James added.

"Thank you, but… this is too much. I can't accept all of this for free, it must have cost you a fortune to make so many potions," Remus said.

James shrugged. It did cost a fortune, that part was right. However, he was now in possession of a private vault at the bank, one that was filled to the brim with gold galleons.

The goblins were very happy to buy a mountain of various precious metals and never asked about their provenance.

"Forget about money already. I told you that 'thank you' was enough." James tapped the box and returned it to its miniature size before handing it to Remus. "Just send me an owl when you run out, and I will make you more."

"In fifty years?" Remus had a smirk on his face.

"Sure. In fifty years. We can make an event out of it and go get something to drink." James chuckled.

"Oh, I can't wait to be old enough to drink. I want to try some firewhisky," Peter said.

"You don't need to be older for that. I know a senior who can get us a bottle for a few sickles," Sirius said. "We can celebrate tonight."

"A bit late for that now. School ends in two days," Remus pointed out.

"Good thing that I am a man who plans ahead. I got a bottle two weeks ago. It's in my trunk." Sirius smirked.

"Well… would you look at that. Sirius can be clever sometimes," James pointed out.

"I had a lot of free time to think, given that we have barely pranked anyone this year." He made a disgruntled expression. "And if James becomes a professor next year, there won't be more chances."

"I'm sure you can find more productive ways to spend your time," James suggested.

"Like what?"

"Like studying? We are at school," Remus said.

Sirius chuckled. "No thanks, I think next year I will focus on Quidditch and my girl."

While James was having a good time with his friends, his father was not having such a great time.

"Move, come on! Secure the area, and get those muggles out of here," Fleamont shouted orders to all the agents present.

His eyes went back to the entrance of the Leaky Cauldron. Whoever had started this mess had also blown up the entrance of the tavern, causing a commotion among the muggles and putting the Statute of Secrecy at risk.

That's why his department had been called with such urgency.

There was a powerful charm covering the Leaky Cauldron so muggles would not take notice of it and just walk by.

However, this only worked under normal circumstances. If the entrance of the place were to be destroyed by any means, the muggles were bound to realize that something was going on, despite the protections.

They had managed to disperse most of them and reapplied a more potent charm.

The moment a muggle got too close and looked at the Leaky Cauldron, they would feel the urgent need to go somewhere else.

"Sir!"

Fleamont turned around and found his assistant waving at him.

"Someone must have called the firemen!"

Fleamont sighed when he saw the large red truck pulling closer. "I'll take care of it. Make sure no more civilians get too close and have someone fix the wall of the tavern already."

He hoped that the inside of Diagon Alley looked better than this.

"Greetings, gentlemen." Fleamont adjusted his robes and approached the fireman who he recognized as the Captain.

They all looked at him but didn't notice anything strange about his attire.

There was an enchantment on Fleamont's robes so muggles would only see a man dressed in an elegant suit and not think much of it.

"Who are you? We received a call saying there was an explosion." The Captain glanced towards the tavern and quickly looked away. "That's weird… I can't see any damage."

"Just a gas leak. But we've got everything under control." Fleamont held his wand under his robes and placed a compulsion charm on the fireman to expedite things.

"I see… so everything is under control." The Captain was feeling dizzy and shook his head.

"That's right. I'm sorry you had to come all the way here for nothing. But everything is alright now." Fleamont repeated the charm just for extra safety.

"Sir?" One of the other firemen glanced at their Captain, noticing his strange behavior.

"Get back on the truck. It was a false alarm." The Captain ordered his men.

"One more problem solved." Fleamont waited until the truck went away to turn his attention to the tavern. Official source is NoveIF

The other muggles had been dispersed, and the front had been fixed with magic.

"Okay, now let's take a look at the inside…" He was already fearing the worst.
