Chapter 201: A Friendly Spar Part 1
"I don't recall when was the last time I visited this room." Dumbledore walked around the Room of Requirement after James opened the door.
"And it certainly didn't look like this."
Since James was the one who called for the door, the room had been shaped to fulfill his request for a training arena.
The large chamber looked mostly empty, except for six stone pillars and a few stacks of wooden boxes that could be used to take cover.
"A very useful room that can serve many purposes. Rowena Ravenclaw must have been an astounding genius," James commented.
"I'm sure all four of the founders were geniuses in their own right." Dumbledore turned to face him. "I'm still not sure this is a good idea."
"What is your concern? I said it was going to be a friendly spar. Nothing lethal or dangerous."
"No alchemy flames," Dumbledore pointed.
"Fine."
"No summoning any of those creatures."
James shrugged. "Just wands."
"Very well." Dumbledore finally nodded.
"And you will agree to my request if I win this spar," James stated.
"I… will think about it." Dumbledore was only willing to concede this much for now.
Their wands appeared in their hands.
James gave the Headmaster a gesture. "Old men first."
"How generous." Dumbledore snapped his wand with an extreme level of nimbleness. "And I am not that old." Three sparks of light shot out and went directly for him.
James reacted by setting up a translucent barrier that intercepted the spells while moving to one side and pointing his wand at his opponent.
A potent stream of flames burst out, filling a large part of the room and making the temperature skyrocket.
Dumbledore said nothing but conjured a massive bubble of water that began to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
Once he had extinguished enough of the flames, Dumbledore realized that James could no longer be seen.
His gaze went to the stack of boxes closest to where he had last spotted James moving.
Dumbledore immediately used a Reducto to decimate the boxes so they could no longer be used for cover, only to discover that James had not been there.
Something hit him from behind with force, making him lose his balance and fall down.
"Urgg!" Dumbledore groaned in pain but still managed to recover himself enough to cast another spell. "Homenum Revelio!" The charm revealed the presence of anyone using an invisibility spell.
A red figure appeared in front of him, and by the shape, Dumbledore could tell that James was about to attack again, not giving him any time to recover.
A red spark, accompanied by a long white rope, was threatening to end this fight on the spot if he was hit by either of them.
"Custodia!" Dumbledore formed a yellow shield in front of him and used it to cover himself while standing up.
As soon as he could, he jammed his wand on the back of the shield, sending it towards James as if it had been shot by a cannon.
Only to notice that he had once more lost track of the boy.
"Tsk!..." Dumbledore could not help but feel frustrated by James's style of fighting. He would use his spells as cover to move away and ambush him.
James was also moving unusually fast, leading the Headmaster to think that he had applied some magical augmentation on himself.
"Huh?!" Dumbledore spotted a dozen small spheres of red light hovering above him. He could not see from where the spell had come and thus was unable to discover James's whereabouts, but right now he was more concerned with the magic itself, as it was one he didn't recognize.
The red orbs only hovered for a few seconds before they began shooting at him, one by one.
Dumbledore could not feel much danger in these orbs as they contained a very small amount of magic, so he concluded that James was once more using them as a distraction.
A simple Protego held in his left hand was enough to stop the orbs from reaching him, but as they only shot one by one, it was taking too long to keep track of them, forcing him to divide his attention.
'Where is he?' The chamber was poorly illuminated by a few candles.
Other than the center, where James had previously cast those flames, the rest was too dark to see anything moving between the shadows.
'How devious…' Dumbledore realized that when James created this room, he made it so it would benefit his style of combat.
There were still many stacks of boxes that James could use as cover, as well as the stone pillars, which were just wide enough to hide a person.
Another orb smashed itself against his shield. And just as he thought he was done with those blasted things, several more appeared.
Dumbledore was more than frustrated now. "Very well… if you want to play it like this, then…" He lifted his wand and made the call. "Fawkes!"
The phoenix appeared in a burst of flames.
It let out a loud cry, and its fire became more intense, as well as creating more light, enough to remove the darkness in the room almost completely.
Dumbledore used this to locate the figure of James, poking from one of the pillars. "Bombarda!" He wasted no time reducing the pillar to rubble.
James jumped away in time but didn't look too pleased. "That was dirty… calling your phoenix after telling me to only make use of my wand." He huffed.
"Did none of those Dark Lords you fought use any dirty tricks?" Dumbledore had a smug smile on his face.
"Okay then…" James shrugged. "Change of plans." White fur began to cover his skin.
