Chapter 254: Chapter 254 Mockery Chapter 254: Chapter 254 Mockery “Wife, they keep following us, what should we do?” Big Bull glanced behind as they walked.
“Who cares, let’s go, we’re going shopping.” Xuexue yanked on his arm, not looking back once as they continued on.
“Alright!” Big Bull looked back one more time.
“Ow! Stop looking back, hurry up.”
At home, with four people to feed, Xuexue realized they were short on food. So, she went to the grocery store, bought a bag of rice and a bag of white flour. Just as she was about to pay, a figure dashed out like lightning, getting in front of her and paying the silver for her.
Xuexue turned her head to see it was one of the servants who had been following them.
“Why are you paying the silver for me?”
“Our shopkeeper instructed us to cover all the expenses for the lady’s purchases today.” As he spoke, his tone rose, seemingly arrogant, assuming Xuexue, a simple country girl, would certainly be in tears of gratitude after hearing him.
“Really?”
“Of course, our shopkeeper’s words are as good as gold, never false.”
“Then, can I buy the whole grocery store?” Xuexue’s lips curled into a smirk as she looked at him.
“This…!”
“What? Can’t afford it?” she asked, her eyebrows raised in mockery.
“Little girl, don’t be too greedy. Your appetite might be a bit too big.” The speaker’s face turned ugly. After all, he was just a servant – he could take charge of buying odds and ends, but buying the entire grocery store was a joke; how much silver would that even cost! If he agreed, the shopkeeper would kill him for sure. He didn’t have the nerve for that.
“Since you can’t make the decision, don’t get in our way. We need to get home,” Xuexue said, stepping out of the grocery store.
Big Bull carried two bags of rice and flour on his shoulder effortlessly, walking side by side with Xuexue.
The remaining servants looked at each other, thinking that despite her stunning looks, this little girl sure was troublesome!
“Oh, and thank your shopkeeper for me.” Suddenly, Xuexue turned her head, smiled, and patted the two bags on Big Bull’s shoulder.
At these words, the servants felt like dying. They had spent their silver, but hadn’t succeeded in wooing her. Back at the store, they were bound to get an earful from the shopkeeper. In an instant, their faces fell, drained of all enthusiasm.
Once they reached the narrow alleys with no one around, Xuexue tossed the two bags of rice and flour into the space.
“Ouch! It hurts so much, master, why did you hit me? Little Taohong didn’t do anything wrong; I was just napping in your rocking chair, and you threw me to the ground. That’s so cruel, wuu…” From the space, there came faint whimpers of grievance from Xiao Taohong.
Xuexue felt a bit guilty. After all, she had forgotten about the little ghost living in the space—she would have to be more careful next time she put things in there.
“Wife, who’s talking?” Big Bull perked up his ears to listen.
“It’s Xiao Taohong!”
“Where is she?”
“In the space!”
“Why doesn’t she come out to play?”
“Well…” Xuexue was at a loss for words. Summoning a ghost in broad daylight to soak up some sun? Wouldn’t that be like suicide?
Big Bull never knew that Xiao Taohong was a ghost. Since Xuexue had given him quite a fright when she came out of the space last time, and knowing he was afraid of ghosts, she didn’t tell him, to save him from getting worked up again.
“Ow! Stop talking, let’s go buy some pork. We’ll make braised pork for dinner.”
“Oh! Wife, you haven’t told me yet, why won’t Xiao Taohong come out to play?”
“I don’t know, ask her yourself tonight.”
“Okay then.”
