Chapter 248: Chapter 248 Freeloading Chapter 248: Chapter 248 Freeloading The Old Residence
Madam Xie, sitting in the courtyard, saw Xuexue and Big Bull each return with a large bundle of garlic shoots, her previously dejected spirits lifted into surprise, and she quickly went up to greet them, “You’ve snatched back the garlic shoots that vixen spirit cut? That’s great.”
“Exactly, why should we let her take our things away?” Xuexue put down the garlic shoots she was holding.
Madam Xie asked with concern, “That Seductress Fox bullies the kind but fears the tough. When Mother asked her for them, she became vicious. Didn’t she cause you any trouble just now?”
Xuexue sneered, “When she saw Big Bull, she scurried off like a rat who has seen a cat, too hasty to even slip away, let alone cause us trouble. We’d be generous to not trouble her.”
After sitting for a while, Xuexue grew more indignant the more she thought about it, pulling Big Bull up as she headed outside.
Seeing this, Madam Xie quickly asked, “Hey, where are you two going?”
As Xuexue walked away, she turned her head and said, “Mother, Big Bull and I are going out for a stroll; we’ll be back soon.”
The Mo Family
Auntie Sun returned to the Mo family, disheveled and in a sorry state.
Old Lady Mo, sitting on a stool, saw that Auntie Sun’s hands were empty without any cut garlic shoots, her face immediately turned sour. These past few days, she had immensely enjoyed the stir-fried eggs with garlic shoots, her taste buds spoiled by them. Without garlic shoots, she wouldn’t be able to stomach her meal tonight.
“You worthless woman, I ask you to do one thing, and you can’t even do it right. Why didn’t you bring back the garlic shoots?” Old Lady Mo stood up from her stool with a swoop, hands on her hips, berating Auntie Sun furiously.
Ever since she learned about Auntie Sun’s fake pregnancy, her attitude had deteriorated drastically; simply put, nothing about Auntie Sun pleased her anymore. Now, Auntie Sun’s life had become as miserable as Madam Xie’s used to be.
“Mother-in-law, it truly wasn’t my fault. It was that damned girl Xuexue. She, along with that idiot, stopped me and nearly beat me up, even reclaiming the garlic shoots,” Auntie Sun said, looking utterly crestfallen. She wondered how much longer she would have to endure such days.
With Mo Xiaoqiang indifferent towards her and Old Lady Mo treating her worse each day, Auntie Sun felt as if dark clouds loomed overhead, her life filled with despair. Had she not been without the fare, she would have returned to County Town long ago, resuming her old profession as a prostitute, which surely beat being the Mo family’s overworked and underfed maidservant, who could neither eat her fill nor sleep well.
Old Lady Mo looked at her skeptically, tilting her head. “We’ve been cutting those shoots fine until you went. Tell me, did you sneak over to the old residence to tip them off?”
Upon hearing this, Auntie Sun wanted to curse the shrewd and harsh old lady before her, but under her roof, she had no choice but to bow her head. She took a deep breath, responding meekly, “I almost got beaten up by them. How could I possibly be the one who snitched?”
“Then how did they find out?”
“When I was cutting the garlic shoots, I just happened to run into that nasty Madam Xie.” Auntie Sun finally remembered and quickly blurted out, “Yes, yes, it was that nasty woman. She went back and called the idiot over.”
“That nasty woman thinks just because she left the Mo family, I have no way to deal with her. I’ll skin her alive sooner or later,” Old Lady Mo said with a fierce look on her face.
“Well, that’s none of my business,” Auntie Sun said as she turned to leave.
“Hold on,” Old Lady Mo roared again.
A shudder ran through Auntie Sun’s whole body, and she promptly stood still. These days, her pride had been nearly obliterated by Old Lady Mo’s mistreatment, making her almost as subservient as Madam Xie used to be.
“Now go to the kitchen and chop pig fodder this instant. Tonight’s pigs don’t have feed, and we don’t support freeloaders in this house.”
