Hu Die Lan
Chapter 65 Legend of the Werewolf
The NPC didn't run far, circling around the village before darting into a house.
Gu Fei never took his eyes off him, watching closely. Without hesitation, he strode forward and pounded on the door. Gu Fei knew this guy was also a werewolf, but he had already resigned himself to death. He wanted to see if the werewolves in half the village would all reveal their true forms and attack him. If that happened, so be it. He figured this quest chain couldn't be completed without assembling a whole guild.
The door was finally opened after a few thumps, but it wasn't the guy Gu Fei had been chasing. Standing before him was a burly man a full head taller than Gu Fei. Gu Fei clicked his tongue. Werewolves became even bigger after transforming. This guy was already so huge; how big would he be after transforming, like an elephant?
Gu Fei had seen this man before. The guy who ran away had ultimately hidden in his house. Could this guy be the leader of the werewolf group?
"I want to know about the gold mine," Gu Fei said bluntly.
The other man remained silent, neither speaking nor showing any sign of wanting to drive him away.
"I already know you're all werewolves," Gu Fei blurted out.
Unexpectedly, instead of trying to silence him, the other man showed a nervous and uneasy expression.
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone," Gu Fei stated his position to the werewolf. Thinking it over, he realized that doing quests couldn't just rely on words. Sometimes it was necessary to show some props. Just because this was a holographic game didn't mean he should treat these machines like real people. Trying to connect with them emotionally was definitely a waste of effort. With this in mind, Gu Fei took out Mo Fei's ashes and held them in front of the man.
"I found these ashes in the mine. Mo Fei's grave is empty. I think you dug him up and burned him to ashes, right?" Gu Fei said.
A look of sorrow began to flash in the other man's eyes.
The NPC's emotional changes were blatantly displayed on his face, clearly for the players to see. Gu Fei had to consider the problem from their emotional perspective.
Hearing that he knew they were werewolves, the NPC seemed very nervous and uneasy.
When Mo Fei's death was mentioned, the NPC looked very sad.
And Mo Fei, he would rather die than reveal his werewolf identity. The others in the village were still in the dark.
Gu Fei finally understood: this group of werewolves was afraid that the villagers would find out their identities. And Mo Fei wanted to look like a human until his last breath, just so as not to cause panic among the villagers, and thus bring trouble to his own people. After all, Mo Fei was a member of the village. If people saw that he was a werewolf, everyone would begin to suspect the real identities of those around them. Under this kind of attention, the werewolves could be exposed by any carelessness.
Thinking that he had actually assumed they killed Mo Fei because they didn't divide the spoils evenly, Gu Fei felt ashamed.
But where did this werewolf who killed Mo Fei come from?
Even more annoying was that this big guy wasn't saying anything! Could it be that this guy was a purebred werewolf who hadn't mastered human language yet?
"You don't want the villagers to know your identities, do you?" Gu Fei continued.
The big guy continued to stare at him.
"Why not?" Gu Fei completely embraced Xiao Yu's spirit this time, asking to the end with unyielding determination.
"We don't want to kill people, and we don't want to be killed," the big guy finally said.
Gu Fei breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "What do you mean?"
"If the villagers knew we were werewolves, they would definitely try to eliminate us," the big guy said. "But in fact, we have lived with them for many years and have never thought of hurting them. We only go to the depths of the forest on the night of the full moon to hunt some wild animals to commemorate the wild blood in our bodies."
"Then why do you live with humans?" Gu Fei asked.
"We lived here first. We used to live in the forest, but later we learned from humans, walked out of the forest and built a village. Later, humans gradually came to live with us. The village has been like this for many years," the big guy said.
"Then what about the werewolf who killed Mo Fei?" Gu Fei said.
"He is not one of us!" the big guy said. "I don't know where he came from, but he has great power. I think he might be someone in the village, because he seems to know a lot about us. But we can't catch his scent at all."
"Why did he kill Mo Fei?" Gu Fei asked.
The big guy stopped talking again.
"Oh dear! You guys ran so fast!" Xiao Yu's voice came from behind. It took her a long time to catch up.
Gu Fei's mind flashed, and he signaled Xiao Yu to take out the sack of gold that was dug out of the woods behind Mo Fei's house.
"I found a map at Mo Fei's place and dug this up," Gu Fei showed the prop once again.
"What's going on with the gold mine?" Gu Fei asked again.
The big guy finally opened his mouth: "One full moon night, we went to the forest to hunt prey. This strange werewolf suddenly appeared and demanded that we obey his leadership. Mo Fei challenged him, but was defeated. From then on, he demanded that we take turns every night to help him mine gold."
"There are so many of you, are you afraid of him alone? Charge together!" Gu Fei said.
"Group attacks are how we treat prey. Battles between werewolves can only be one-on-one. Obeying the strongest is our tradition," the big guy said.
"Is that how Mo Fei died?" Gu Fei asked.
"No... We all felt that this strange guy came from the wrong path, but no one could defeat him. Mo Fei said he would find out his human identity, so that he could use this condition to coerce him. It was probably in this process that Mo Fei was discovered and killed," the big guy said.
"Don't you want to avenge Mo Fei?" Gu Fei said.
"We don't know his human identity, and no one can defeat him," the big guy said.
Gu Fei thought for a while and suddenly asked, "If you werewolves are injured by silver weapons, what will happen?"
"In that case, the wound will take many days to heal," the big guy said.
"Is one night enough?"
"Not enough."
"Is there any medicine or magic that can be used?" Gu Fei asked.
"No, we werewolves have very strong self-healing abilities. As long as we are not injured by silver weapons, we can recover quickly," the big guy said.
Gu Fei already had a plan in mind, nodded and said, "Let us help you deal with this guy!"
"Relying on humans to solve it, that's too despicable and shameless!" the big guy said.
Unexpectedly, the werewolf had quite the integrity. Gu Fei said helplessly, "Maybe he is also a human?"
"Human? We saw with our own eyes that he is a werewolf and has the aura of a werewolf. It's just because he hides his aura very well when he turns into a human that we can't find him," the big guy said.
"Does he have something around his neck?" Gu Fei asked.
"It seems so..."
"That's him. I already injured him with a silver weapon yesterday, but I didn't find any villagers with injuries today. If he wasn't human, how could he recover so quickly?" Gu Fei said. "Don't worry, leave it to me! Also, I won't tell anyone your identities."
After saying goodbye to the big guy, Gu Fei and Xiao Yu set off again.
"What did you find out?" Xiao Yu asked. When she came over, Gu Fei and the big guy had already talked for a while.
Gu Fei simply repeated it. After hearing the back, Xiao Yu had already forgotten the front, and only raised a question about the last sentence: "Can a human's wound heal in one night?"
"Humans don't have this ability themselves, but there is magic. The healing of a priest can instantly restore wounds, right? Think about those NPC priests at the entrance of the Priest Academy," Gu Fei reminded Xiao Yu. At the entrance of the Priest Academy in Yun Duan City, severely injured players can receive treatment from the system priests here, and their wounds will instantly return to their original state. They can heal players, and of course they can also heal NPCs. But werewolves, these dark creatures, obviously cannot accept the sacred treatment of priests.
"Then how could humans possibly transform into werewolves?" Xiao Yu said.
"I'm not sure about that yet, but I already know who he is," Gu Fei said.
"Who is it?" Xiao Yu asked.
"Whoever has the gold mine is the one," Gu Fei said with a smile.
"Adrian!" Xiao Yu said.
"That's right!" Gu Fei nodded.
"Oh no, if you kill him later, will my quest be uncompleted?" Xiao Yu worried.
"How could it be!" Gu Fei said, "After I complete my quest, even if Adrian dies, he will be refreshed again, still the wealthy Adrian of Ye Guang Village. Maybe next time you will come to him for gold."
"That's good!" Xiao Yu said.
"Thanks to you this time," Gu Fei said.
"How so?"
"If it weren't for your quest, I wouldn't have known that Adrian was related to the gold mine. How would I know he was a werewolf?" Gu Fei smiled.
"I told you, I'm a quest expert!" Xiao Yu said.
"So amazing!" Gu Fei exclaimed.
"Then your quest chain is about to be completed, right?" Xiao Yu asked.
"I think it's almost there." The outline of Adrian's big house could already be seen in front of the road. Gu Fei took out the Baptism of Fire. "The current problem is how to defeat this guy."

Hey... even earlier again.
