Chapter 331: Chapter 331. Perceptive .

"He was a vimodial contractor, isn’t he?" Zarek asked Kailen.

Kailen was not surprised that Zarek had come to this conclusion. Zarek was a very deductive person who focused on small details during conversations, from what Kailen had learnt about him during this short period of knowing him.

Earlier, when Kailen told him that he had just figured out a way to intervene in the battle of Zarek and Vesper at the last moment, Kailen could perceive that Zarek suspected he was hiding something. However, Zarek decided not to press further.

It seemed Zarek had focused on the fact that Kailen was sincere in his statement that he would have used his teleportation abilities as a means of rescuing Zarek from the situation in the end if things had come to the worst, as a gesture of goodwill, and decided not to probe further. After all, Kailen deduced that Zarek mused that everyone has their secrets.

Anyway, concerning the question Zarek had just asked, Kailen did not see it as a question. It was more of Zarek figuring it out and just asking Kailen to probe Kailen’s reaction. After all, Zarek had never requested anything from Kailen for the help he had provided for Kailen.

He didn’t have any business prying into Kailen’s personal matters. But they were now allies. So if Kailen valued their relationship and wanted them to build trust going forward, he could not keep hiding things from Zarek all the time. Kailen valued his allies as much as he hated his enemies.

So he replied to Zarek in honesty.

"Yeah, he was a vimodial contractor."

"So my assumption was correct. Then it seems the academy could be more dangerous than we can ever imagine," Zarek sighed.

The moment Kailen replied, Ethan revealed an expression of pain and anger on his face. He had just come to a terrifying realization.

"So when he said the path of power he had chosen would have ended him dying and all that, he was talking about his consciousness being completely eroded by the vimodial one day and the vimodial possessing his body. Also, when he said my girlfriend was a tasty one, he meant that her life force was tasty when he sucked it?"

Kailen and Zarek nodded at his words.

In fact, Zarek had come to this realization that Vesper was a vimodial contractor from these same words of Vesper. Moreover, he had been more inclined about the fact that vimodial contractors existed on campus, so drawing the conclusion was easier. It was after this that he probed Kailen if Vesper was a vimodial contractor.

Ethan clenched his fists. Now, he felt like he had not tortured Vesper enough before Kailen killed him.

"I intend to turn him into a shadow creature and extract his memories concerning their allies and meeting place on campus. After that..."

A glint of ruthlessness flashed through Kailen’s eyes. Zarek and Ethan didn’t even have to hear what he had to say to figure out his train of thought.

Ethan clenched his fists. Initially, he had agreed to join this plan to subdue Vesper because he wanted Kailen to assist him when he took down his father, and he also wanted revenge and closure from Vesper for killing his girlfriend.

However, now that he had found out how his girlfriend had died, his hatred for the vimodials had reached an extremely terrifying level.

"The Revearson Society will be willing to help you when you are ready to act."

Ethan politely nodded to Kailen and Zarek, then added, "I look forward to our cooperation."

After that, he turned into a streak of light and bolted off.

"You really are one unpredictable fellow," Zarek sighed, floating closer to Kailen.

Kailen was someone you could never predict. The moment you thought you knew more about him or what cards he was gonna deal, he did something out of the ordinary. Such people were very hard to deal with when they were your enemies. It was a good thing that such a terrifying person was his ally and not an enemy. Zarek felt like he had made the right choice to befriend Kailen.

"Strength, when severed from reason, is akin to a comet without orbit, brilliant for a moment, yet destructive in its fall."

On seeing that Kailen had borrowed the signature saying of the Atrexia clan, Zarek couldn’t help but chuckle in amusement.

"By borrowing our family anthem, you mean to say that brute strength is not the only factor needed to deal with enemies. Without a good head, a discerning and tactical mind—when the need be—one can die miserably?"

Kailen merely smiled. But that confirmed Zarek’s words.

Zarek was pleased with Kailen’s mindset. "Good to have a like-minded person as an ally," he added. "Anyway, why did you have to use me as some sort of probing chess piece?"

Kailen figured from his tone that Zarek was not offended. He was just... curious.

He sighed. "So you figured it out."

Zarek scoffed. "Who do you think I am? I figured it out the moment you told me that lie about finding a solution at the last minute."

"Right," Kailen mused to himself. "Turns out he didn’t just figure out I was hiding something, he figured out that I had used him as a way to probe out all of Vesper’s cards, and whether or not a galactic level lifeform—an instructor—had followed him here."

This Zarek guy was probably one of the most perceptive individuals he had ever come across.

"And you are not angry?" Kailen asked, curious.

"Why would I be? To be honest, I am using you too. No offence."

Kailen nodded. "None taken."

Zarek continued, "We both know that every contribution I’ve made towards you is something I am hoping you can repay in the future, as long as it doesn’t inconvenience you and someone you hold dear."

"Fair point," Kailen nodded.

There was no such thing as a free lunch in the universe. As long as Zarek and his sister or family whatsoever were not a threat to him and his loved ones, he didn’t mind them riding on his coat-tails in the future. He’d repay Zarek’s investment and support.

"Anyway, you might want to check the news when we get back. A surprise awaits," Zarek said to Kailen, then bolted off.

Curious about what he meant, Kailen caught up.

"This will take too long. Let’s teleport," Kailen said.

With that, Kailen used Umbral Replacement to get them both out of there.
