Chapter 529: Battle Between Two Mythical Creatures (2)
Chapter 529
KA-BOOOM!
A huge thunder-like explosion rocked the mountain with so much force that not only was a violent gust of wind blown up, the shockwave that followed was so intense that the whole mountain shuddered like it might split in half.
Even Grey’s unconscious body was sent skidding several inches across the cracked stone. He stopped just a metre away from the jagged edge of the mountain, a cliffside drop nearly twenty metres high that promised certain death if he slipped further.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three consecutive bangs followed, each one louder than the last, as Thalos began swinging his greatsword around like a maniac. His movements were so quick that his arms blurred, each strike a blur of steel as he countered every one of the phoenix’s vicious blows. Sparks and shockwaves erupted with each collision, shaking the ground below.
SHRIIIEK!
The creature screeched, its cry splitting the sky, and swung one of its massive wings sideways. The gale-force sweep was met with the unyielding clash of Thalos’ sword, and another deafening boom echoed across the mountain.
Before the gargoyle could press the attack, streaks of lightning fizzled from the beast’s talons. They shot across the rocky ground like glowing serpents, racing towards Thalos with blistering speed.
"Tch!" Thalos scoffed, his golden eyes narrowing. He slammed his foot hard into the mountain with all his monstrous strength. The ground caved in, and a massive slab of earth shot upward like a shield. The lightning slammed against it with a loud crack, dispersing harmlessly against the rock.
"Nice try," Thalos muttered.
Without wasting a second, he pivoted and kicked the earthen slab. The force of the blow hurled it towards the phoenix with bone-shattering velocity, the air splitting in its path.
Unfortunately, the beast shimmered out of sight, teleporting in the blink of an eye and reappearing above, wings outstretched as it hovered in the skies.
Around the phoenix, ten glowing bolts of lightning instantly manifested. With no pause, they fired downward like divine judgment.
The gargoyle crouched, calm as ever, then shot into the air. His sword spun with brutal precision, swatting the bolts away one after another.
Each one ricocheted off into the distance, exploding across the mountainside. For the last orb, he didn’t even bother with his sword. Instead, he spun midair and drove his foot into it. The bolt split into two halves, one crashing into the ground in a violent flare, while the other zipped out of sight.
CRACK!
The stray half slammed directly into Grey. His body convulsed violently as his hair fizzled, sparks racing along his skin. His unconscious form jolted and skidded closer to the mountain’s edge, blood trickling fresh from his lips.
SWOOSH!
The phoenix nose-dived, its massive beak pointed down like a spear of destruction. Thalos raised his sword to defend, but the beast shimmered again, vanishing from sight. In the blink of an eye, it appeared directly behind him.
ZAP!
A dozen bolts of lightning exploded at point blank range, slamming into the gargoyle’s back and sending his body skidding forward. He dug his heels into the ground, then stabbed his sword deep into the stone, dragging himself to a grinding halt.
"Don’t you get it?" Thalos roared, his fanged grin spreading wide. "Your puny lightning abilities can’t do a damn thing to me. My body is immune because of what I am. I’m no ordinary beast— I’m a mythical gargoyle!"
The phoenix didn’t care. Its wings beat heavily, and with each flap, stray sparks of lightning spilled from its feathers, arcing dangerously close to Grey’s prone body.
With one powerful leap, the phoenix shot forward like living lightning. Thalos braced himself, sword clutched tightly as he slammed the flat of his blade against his armored gauntlet. A metallic clang rang out like a war drum.
The phoenix appeared in front of him in a blur, its beak flashing dangerously close. Thalos swung his blade in retaliation, but before the weapon connected, the beast teleported again, reappearing at his side. Its massive wings flared out, feathers turning to spears of lightning that rained down toward the gargoyle.
Thalos didn’t care as he spun around and dashed straight into the lightning feathers with his eyes set firmly on the phoenix.
His feet pounded against the ground with thunderous steps, and each feather struck him, electrocuting his body in bursts of sizzling arcs.
Yet, he casually tanked it, his stony skin cracking slightly but refusing to crumble, as he swung his sword with merciless intent towards the phoenix.
Instead of teleporting like it usually would, the beast simply shot backwards, narrowly avoiding the sword.
But to its utter surprise, Thalos grinned as the already towering greatsword suddenly doubled in size, stretching upward until it looked more like a colossal pillar from the heavens itself.
It gleamed under the storm-filled sky, a titan’s weapon in the hand of a beast. By the time the phoenix realized, it was already too late.
BOOOOM!
The blade slammed directly into its abdomen with terrifying force. The ground beneath them split apart, rocks cracked open and shot into the air like arrows, and the mountain shook as if it were alive.
The oversized bird screeched as its body was launched several metres away, feathers scattering in every direction while the scent of burnt flesh filled the air.
It tried desperately to steady itself, wings flapping violently, but before it could, Thalos was already in motion. He leaped into the air, moving with surprising speed for his massive build.
His sword returned to its normal size, but it was raised high above his head, the edge gleaming with lethal intent as he aimed to cleave the phoenix in two with a direct smash.
The phoenix, instincts blazing, immediately rolled aside just in time. The gargoyle’s sword came crashing down into the ground where it had been a moment ago.
CRAAACK!
The strike tore through the earth so cleanly it was almost unreal, the ground parting like an ocean split in two. Deep trenches spread outward like scars, glowing faintly from the heat of the impact.
Before the gargoyle could regain his stance, the phoenix used its wings as a springboard and shot forward like a bolt of living lightning. Its talons stretched out, crackling with raw power, and in less than a heartbeat, it was in front of Thalos.
BAM!
BANG!
Its talons smashed directly into the gargoyle’s shoulder, piercing deep into his rocky flesh and drawing blood with vicious precision. Without losing momentum, the phoenix spun its body in midair and slammed Thalos straight into the ground, the impact causing another thunderous quake as the mountain trembled.
The ground caved in beneath them, dust and shattered rocks exploding outward. The phoenix pressed harder, its talons digging deeper into the gargoyle’s body, sparks sizzling as blood mixed with lightning. Thalos grit his teeth, his jaw tightening as he prepared to swing his hand upward, determined to slice the beast away with his sword.
But the phoenix, as if reading his movements, flapped its wings with brutal force.
WHOOOSH!
The wings slammed against his hands, pinning them against the broken ground. Thalos’ sword hand was trapped, his weapon immobilized, and his eyes narrowed in fury. That wasn’t all—the violent flap unleashed arcs of lightning that streaked across the battlefield, many of them veering uncontrollably.
One of the bolts shot toward Grey, who still lay unconscious on the ground, oblivious to the chaos unraveling around him. His body twitched as sparks crawled dangerously close, the threat of death looming over him even in his unconscious state.
The phoenix’s smirk widened as it sensed its advantage. With Thalos’ movements restricted, it opened its massive beak directly in front of the gargoyle’s face. A blinding glow erupted within its throat, so bright and intense that Thalos instinctively squinted and turned his head slightly.
The heat rolling off it was unbearable, the energy vibrating with the promise of destruction. The beast was preparing to unleash a lightning bolt straight into his head at point-blank range.
"Shit..." Thalos muttered under his breath, his face twisted into a grimace.
’Fuck! Even if I’m immune to lightning attacks, this one will definitely blow my head clean off. Fuck!’ the gargoyle thought, his mind racing as the glow grew brighter and brighter, threatening to end everything in an instant.
