Having admired him for so many years, and with constant proximity, she had naturally learned much of his character.
She had even mastered his knack for being a scumbag.
"Did I hit a nerve? Mr. Wen, you don't need to feign deep affection in front of me. If you truly cared for her, you wouldn't have married and had children with your ex-wife," Shen Su said mercilessly. "You simply couldn't bear for your ex-wife and children to waste their time on you, so you chose a cost-effective backup, letting her be your free nanny."
The more Shen Su spoke, the more agitated he became. Who could have imagined Feng Feng would do such a thing?
What kind of obsession and affection did she have for Wen Zhouyuan to care for him so selflessly, even knowing he was going to die?
"I don't treat her as a free nanny, Mr. Shen. Please don't impose your biased views on me," Wen Zhouyuan replied. "My feelings for Feng Feng are not for others to question."
Shen Su laughed in anger, challenging him, "Feelings? What feelings do you have for her?"
The longer he talked with Wen Zhouyuan, the more hypocritical Shen Su found him. He didn't believe Feng Feng couldn't see it, yet she was still willing to waste her time caring for Wen Zhouyuan.
Wen Zhouyuan detected Shen Su's rising anger and his demeanor grew more composed. "I know you like Feng Feng, but she doesn't like you. You shouldn't take your frustration out on me."
"We're all adults. I believe Mr. Shen understands that no one is obligated to reciprocate your feelings," Wen Zhouyuan said. "Coming here to question and yell at me won't make her like you."
Shen Su's knuckles cracked as he clenched his fists. Seeing Wen Zhouyuan's calm composure, he finally understood the meaning of that lyric – the favored are always so confident.
Because Feng Feng loved him, he was the eternal winner in this game. As for himself, he had already lost without a fight the moment Feng Feng chose Wen Zhouyuan.
Feng Feng returned upstairs after buying some items from the convenience store. As she pushed open the hospital room door, she saw someone who shouldn't have been there.
Surprise immediately flickered across her usually calm face. Once she recovered, she habitually walked to Wen Zhouyuan's side, took his arm, and looked at Shen Su.
Shen Su stood with his hands in his pockets, his fingers stiff.
It was a protective gesture. She feared he would harm Wen Zhouyuan and, without asking, unconditionally stood by Wen Zhouyuan's side.
It was truly a painful sight.
Feng Feng asked, "What are you doing here?" Her tone was filled with hostility.
Shen Su chuckled softly. "Naturally, I'm here to check on Mr. Wen's condition."
Feng Feng's expression froze.
They were both intelligent people. With Shen Su's remark, she immediately understood his hidden meaning. Anzhen Hospital was an enterprise he had invested in, making it easy for him to investigate Wen Zhouyuan's condition.
Seeing the change in Feng Feng's expression, Shen Su's smile widened. "We've known each other for over two years, Ms. Feng. I didn't realize you were such a loyal and righteous person."
Feng Feng said, "You've finished checking. You can leave now."
Shen Su raised an eyebrow. "Ms. Feng, will you see me out?"
This implied he wanted to speak with her alone.
Before Feng Feng could respond, Wen Zhouyuan grabbed her arm, his eyes signaling her not to go.
Shen Su witnessed their interaction and didn't rush them, waiting leisurely with his hands in his pockets.
After a moment of consideration, Feng Feng pulled her hand away and said to Wen Zhouyuan, "I'm going out for a bit."
Wen Zhouyuan couldn't stop Feng Feng from leaving, so he could only watch as she and Shen Su departed together.
Shen Su followed Feng Feng out of the room. Neither of them spoke until they were in the elevator going down. Suddenly, Shen Su grabbed Feng Feng's wrist and pinned her against the wall at the hospital's ground floor.
Feng Feng looked up and saw his half-smiling eyes, the bloodshot veins resembling a dense spiderweb.
Seeing Shen Su like this at such close range, Feng Feng suddenly felt a discomfort in her left ventricle, as if a hand had clutched her heart.
Perhaps it was because this was so different from the Shen Su she knew.
He had usually been carefree before. Even when he had pestered her later, he had never had such an expression, one that seemed to carry disappointment, despair, and utter desolation.
The words she was about to say got stuck in her throat, and she momentarily forgot her struggle.
Shen Su looked at Feng Feng in silence for a long time before asking, "Are you crazy?"
Feng Feng did not answer him.
Shen Su gripped Feng Feng's shoulders, his voice suddenly rising, "Feng Feng, I'm asking if you're crazy, understand?"
Feng Feng replied, "I'm very clear-headed." Not only clear-headed, but she also knew exactly what he was asking.
Shen Su continued, "How much longer can he live? Do you like him that much? Knowing he only came back to you because he's dying, and you're still willing to be his nanny!"
The jealousy in his voice was no longer concealed. As he uttered the last few words, his voice even trembled, betraying his agitation.
Feng Feng felt the discomfort in her chest intensify. She took a deep breath, trying to maintain her usual composure.
"I know why he came to me. No one forced me; I want to accompany him through his final journey," Feng Feng stated with great firmness.
Shen Su retorted, "If he dies, will you follow him in death? Feng Feng, are you out of your mind? If he truly had feelings for you, there would be no chance for me and you to even know each other!"
"I know," Feng Feng said, lowering her eyes to avoid his gaze. "But I just want to be with him."
Her words, spoken so casually, felt like sharp blades, piercing him and leaving him riddled with wounds and bleeding profusely.
Shen Su remained silent for nearly a minute before suddenly laughing, his shoulders shaking with the sound.
Feng Feng glanced at him and slowly closed her eyes.
"Good, very good," Shen Su released Feng Feng, gently touching her face, his smile both tender and gentlemanly. "Then I wish you happiness, Ms. Feng."
With that, he turned and left without looking back.
Feng Feng leaned against the wall, her heart pounding against her chest, a suffocating ache. She unconsciously raised her hand and placed it over her left chest.
Shen Su's back had long since disappeared. Feng Feng stared in the direction he had gone, unable to snap out of it for a long time.
From the moment Feng Feng and Shen Su left, Wen Zhouyuan had been restless. After nearly an hour, Feng Feng finally returned.
As soon as Wen Zhouyuan saw her, he stepped forward and placed his hands on her shoulders, asking with concern, "Did he give you any trouble?"
While asking, Wen Zhouyuan observed Feng Feng's expression.
Although she wore makeup, her lips looked a little dry, her eyes seemed slightly red, and despite her calm demeanor, her gaze was unfocused.
After he asked his question, Feng Feng didn't answer immediately, which made Wen Zhouyuan even more worried. "Feng Feng, are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Feng Feng finally came back to herself. She dodged Wen Zhouyuan's hand. "We just chatted a bit. He's not the type to lay hands on women, don't worry."
After parting ways with Feng Feng, Shen Su did not leave the hospital. Sitting in his car, he smoked half a pack of cigarettes, his mind replaying the words spoken by Feng Feng and Wen Zhouyuan.
He started to laugh.
