Chapter 207: Chapter 207: What If I Give Up?
Matthias was truly heartbroken to imagine his wife giving up so easily on her current achievements. They had fought so hard to seize the position from Fransisca, yet Victoria had given up so readily. Was his wife experiencing a major problem he wasn’t aware of? Were all the board members attacking her again for her unreliable leadership skills?
Matthias doesn’t want to bring Victoria down either. Instead, as a good husband, his role now is to be a confidante.
"Is something wrong at work? Is everyone bullying you again?"
Victoria smiled faintly as she closed her laptop. "Actually, I’ve been thinking about this since we caught Gianna. I’ve been contemplating whether I’m worthy of a leadership position. Especially since I still have to run the studio."
"So, you will give up not because you are being oppressed?"
"But, will you be angry if I act recklessly?"
Matthias hugged his wife tightly. "No. I’m actually really worried about you. You’ve been working too hard lately. What if you get sick from not getting enough rest?"
"No way. I’m used to handling a lot of work. Plus, I still remember how cruel you used to be to me."
"Me?"
"Yes, I remember you used to make me work overtime at your house on purpose for some ridiculous reason. Since then, I’ve gotten used to handling a lot of work." Her lips landed on his cheek. "Thank you, Matty."
"If I were you, I’d be furious. It’s strange that you actually enjoy being given such a burdensome job. You are so innocent."
"Because thanks to me doing your unreasonable tasks, now I am your wife. If I hadn’t worked overtime at that time, until now our relationship would only be as business partners."
"But, if you really can’t handle the overwhelming amount of work, you can take a break. You’re new to the company, after all; if you ask for help, I can help you finish your work."
Victoria hugged her husband and buried her head in his chest. "Why do you like helping me when I don’t even ask for it?"
"Because I’ve always wanted to help you. I rarely help others, but I like helping those who genuinely support me. Just like now, I want to help Laura and Ansel."
"Speaking of Ansel, I’m actually worried about him."
Hearing his wife worry about another man, his brow furrowed. "Why do you care more about Ansel than me?"
"Are you jealous?"
"No. I’m not jealous. Besides, Ansel already said he didn’t want to pursue me anymore."
For a moment, Victoria found it difficult to keep her eyes open. Having worked so hard all day, she was now nearly exhausted.
Matthias took the initiative to carry his wife’s body out of the study, then walked towards their bedroom.
He slowly laid his wife down on the bed and covered her with the blanket, covering her neck. "You should go to sleep now. We can finish our work tomorrow."
"But, are you really willing to help me? Don’t you have a lot of work to do yourself?"
"Don’t worry, this kind of work is quite easy for me to complete. I’ll teach you the trick later." Matthias winked with his right eye.
*****
Two days had passed, and Victoria and Matthias had been invited to an interview by Laura about their inspiring stories that had influenced the people of this city. Before the interview, Matthias and Victoria chatted with Laura briefly in the CEO’s office. Matthias was still unaccustomed to dealing with his friend, known as a pious woman. Now, she is a successful career woman. In fact, she was the one who wanted to interview her friend.
"Wow, you’ve become quite the career woman now!" Matthias looked around the CEO’s office with a twinkling in his eyes.
Laura smiled shyly, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Actually, I still have a lot to learn from Victoria. Especially since she inspired me to do something I’ve never done before."
Victoria flashed a beaming smile and patted Laura’s shoulder. "I still have a lot to learn from Matthias. He’s the main character in today’s interview."
Suddenly, an uninvited guest burst into the room, making Matthias and Victoria’s eyes widen. They already knew Laura liked Ansel, but why did Ansel want to meet her now? Was it because he missed her?
"Ansel, what are you doing here?" Matthias asked with a glare.
Ansel smiled sheepishly and scratched his head. "I just wanted to meet Laura."
Matthias and Victoria exchanged playful smiles. They both knew Ansel liked Laura too, but he didn’t dare say it out loud.
"By the way, have you used any ointment on your face?" Laura asked, looking at her friend’s face, which was still slightly bruised.
Victoria furrowed her eyebrows. "What did Ansel do to get hurt?"
"He actually saved me from the thugs. But because he pushed himself too hard, he fought all the thugs with his own hands until he was injured."
"I don’t care if I get hurt badly. You’re just a woman who doesn’t deserve that kind of pain!" Ansel replied confidently, looking at his dearest friend.
Matthias and Victoria could feel the warm and sweet atmosphere in the room. They were actually quite envious of this couple’s simple yet touching courtship. Was it time for them to leave?
"Ansel, I’m actually really jealous of how much you care about Laura. He’s so lucky to have such a good friend," Victoria said in awe, staring at her blushing ex-fiancé.
"Shall we get ready now?" Matthias asked, putting his arm around his wife’s shoulder.
Laura smiled faintly as she touched her friend’s arm. "You guys go to the studio first. I still want to talk to Ansel."
Victoria, not wanting to be outdone, gripped her husband’s hand tightly. "Okay, then we’ll go now."
In fact, Laura was more likely embarrassed to face Ansel at such an inopportune moment. However, that didn’t mean she wanted to banish her best friend now.
"By the way, what did you want to talk to me about?"
