Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Preparation for Company’s Anniversary Party

What exactly was on this recording device? When Matthias turned it on, he heard the voices of an old woman and an old man conversing. But the old man’s voice wasn’t his father in law’s, but rather his father in law’s personal lawyer. Listening intently to the conversation, his brow furrowed and his right fist clenched as he heard a single word that was the key to his father-in-law’s murder.

Matthias remembered himself talking to his father-in-law earlier. His father in law told him to be wary of everyone around him because his closest people all this time only wore masks. Matthias is also increasingly suspicious that the accident that happened to his wife two years ago was caused by the same person when he heard the old woman’s cruel words.

Matthias had previously placed his recording device on the patient’s bedside table. He had deliberately hidden it inside a bouquet of flowers so that no one would notice. Not even his father in law knew about it. To protect everyone he cared about, he was willing to do anything.

"Victoria, I know how to prevent your stepmother from being acquitted of your biological father’s murder. I’ve managed to obtain evidence, albeit circumstantial. I hope this recording can free you from that old woman."

Of course, Matthias didn’t immediately carry out his rather brutal act. He also wanted to strategize to ensure the smooth running of his mission. A week passed before the funeral ceremony concluded, but he still didn’t want to tell his wife. The situation had become increasingly tense since Devan inherited his company from his stepdaughter.

Matthias could only console his wife as usual. He cared for her lovingly, growing increasingly concerned about her and the baby’s deteriorating health due to stress. Matthias never tired of cooking chicken soup for his wife every day to keep her healthy.

"Tory, since you have to fight your two greatest enemies now, you need to eat a lot. I don’t want you to look weak in front of them."

Victoria smiled happily, slowly stroking her husband’s head. "Now I’ve let go of my father. Since the reading of the will, I’ve become even more determined to take back my father’s company." A weary sigh escaped her lips. "But they still want to hold an anniversary party for D&C Group this coming holiday. They’ll announce Fransisca as the primary heir."

"That’s why I bought a gift for you."

"What gift?"

Matthias enthusiastically picked up two shopping bags that had been placed on the sofa. He returned to his wife and picked up a box containing a pair of medium-heel black shoes.

"You’re pregnant now. You shouldn’t wear heels that are too high. I’ve noticed your feet are getting more swollen by the day. If you wear lower heels, you won’t feel so sore when you walk," Matthias said as he helped his wife put on the heels.

Victoria’s reaction was radiant as she stared at the beautiful new shoes her husband had bought her. The black heels were complemented by straps adorned with sparkling beads. "I really like these shoes. Thank you, Matthias." Her right hand slowly stroked her husband’s head. "Although many people say shoes are a farewell gift, I consider your gift of shoes a gift to strengthen our relationship."

"I’ve also bought a dress for you that matches your shoes. It’s the perfect size for your body. Don’t worry, I chose a dress that’s not too big and not too small."

Her eyes sparkled as she looked at her husband. "Matthias... why did you go this far?"

"Because I want you to shine brightly at the D&C Group company anniversary party. Even though I wasn’t invited, I’ll still support you from behind."

Victoria burst into tears of joy, hugging her husband tightly. "You should have come with me to that party. I really needed you to accompany me."

"But, don’t you have Ansel now as your personal bodyguard?"

"I still choose you because you are my beloved husband."

There’s a real reason Matthias doesn’t want to attend D&C Group’s anniversary party tomorrow. He feels unworthy of attending a party for the company he’s been destroying for years. Then, everyone would hate him, just like when he attended his father-in-law’s funeral. Not only that, but he’s now only acting as Victoria’s business partner, even though a video clip showing their romantic scene had previously trended.

"Still, I can’t be with you tomorrow." Matthias gently stroked his wife’s beautiful hair. "Even without seeing you in person tomorrow, I’m sure you’ll shine the brightest among everyone at the party."

"I would shine more if I went with you."

"Maybe if something happens to you, you should call me. I immediately put my business on hold."

Her right eyebrow raised. "Matthias, what exactly did you plan to do while I was at the party? Wasn’t it a holiday?"

"Don’t worry. I won’t do anything dangerous."

Victoria stroked her stomach slowly. "My child, don’t make me feel sick tomorrow, okay? I have to be strong so I can reclaim what your grandfather had."

Meanwhile, Amber and Fransisca were chatting at the bar again, celebrating Fransisca’s appointment as the primary heir to the D&C Group. Amber was envious, seeing her colleague now far superior to her, even though she had previously been superior. She also found it odd that Fransisca was the primary heir over Victoria.

On the one hand, Amber didn’t want to dwell on this any further. She definitely wanted her plan to kill the baby to go smoothly. She didn’t want Victoria to be able to live happily ever after marrying Matthias.

"By the way, after you succeed in getting the throne, what do you want to do with your sister?" Amber asked as she took a sip of champagne.

Fransisca lifted the corners of her lips confidently. "Of course I still want to help you get rid of the baby. Didn’t we agree from the start?"

Amber folded her arms. "Even though you’ve achieved everything, why aren’t you satisfied with your achievements?"
