Those who knew too much about the Slender Ghoul had their minds implanted with the Slender Ghoul's 'virus.' Under the Ghoul's power, they experienced hallucinations of the Slender Ghoul and were frightened to death by their own fantasies.
Once enough people died, the Slender Ghoul gained a physical form and began hunting all humans curious about it across North America.
Since the Slender Ghoul in the minds of everyone who believed in it was different, the Slender Ghoul possessed 'countless' bodies.
