Chapter 360: Chapter 360: Cheng Li’s Origin
"You still won’t tell the truth!" Old Jiang’s face turned increasingly grim, and he shouted sharply. Mrs. Cheng was so frightened that she slid off her stool and then said, "I’ll tell, I’ll tell!"
"I stole the bracelet." Mrs. Cheng gritted her teeth and said.
"Stole it?"
"Indeed!"
"Where did you steal it from? Whose bracelet is it?"
"This, I can’t tell you." Although somewhat afraid of Old Jiang, Mrs. Cheng still didn’t intend to tell him. Because if it became known that she stole the bracelet from her employer, who would want to hire her again?
Fortunately for her, the person was occupied with other matters and later was reported dead; otherwise they might have come looking for her.
"You!" Old Jiang was somewhat angry but eventually suppressed it and then asked, "And Cheng Li, is she really your daughter?"
Old Sir Jiang looked sharply at Mrs. Cheng, his voice a bit cold.
According to what his people found out, Cheng Li didn’t seem to be Mrs. Cheng’s daughter. Like Jiang Xue, she was picked up. Moreover, the places they were found weren’t far apart, just separated by a bridge.
One was at the bridgehead, the other at the bridge end. Various signs indicated that Cheng Li was most likely Jiang Yun’s child.
Mrs. Cheng was about to nod, but thinking of something, she hesitated and said, "No, I picked her up."
"Picked her up, when and where." Old Jiang asked several questions in succession, which made Mrs. Cheng somewhat flustered. However, she remembered the details about Cheng Li clearly and said, "Twenty years ago, near Wang Family Bridge."
"When you picked her up, was there anything with her?"
"Yes, there was a letter. I can’t read, so I don’t know what it said." Mrs. Cheng thought for a moment and said, "When I picked her up, there was a letter placed in her arms."
"Where’s that letter? Hurry, bring it for me to see." Old Jiang was a bit anxious as whether Cheng Li was a Jiang family child depended on what was written in that letter.
"Wait a moment, I have to look for it. It’s been over twenty years, and I can’t remember where I put it."
Mrs. Cheng spoke as she got up and went into the room. She was afraid Cheng Li would find out she wasn’t her biological child and have thoughts, so she specifically hid the letter.
Inside the room, Mrs. Cheng searched several places before finally finding the letter.
Mrs. Cheng looked at the letter to see the paper was still there, then took it back out of the room. As soon as she left the room, Old Jiang saw the yellowed letter in her hand.
Seeing the letter, Old Jiang’s heart was filled with excitement. Mrs. Cheng hesitated a moment before handing it to Old Jiang.
The letter paper was yellowed but still well-preserved. Nonetheless, Old Jiang was very careful, and his hands were trembling a bit as he opened the letter, both from impatience and nervousness.
As the paper unfolded, the familiar handwriting brought tears to Old Jiang’s eyes. He quickly finished reading the letter, revealing a look of joy on his face.
The letter was written by his daughter-in-law, Shangguan You, indicating Cheng Li’s date of birth and a mother’s hopes for her child, as well as a request for kind people to take care of the child.
However, the letter said nothing about the child’s background or lineage.
But even so, the signature at the end, the character "You," confirmed for Old Jiang that Cheng Li was indeed a Jiang family child.
Shangguan You was the name of his eldest daughter-in-law.
After reading the letter, Old Jiang slowly put it away. Mrs. Cheng watched him put the letter away with some urgency and asked Old Jiang, "What did the letter say, Old Sir?"
