San Tian Liang Jue

Chapter 26 Strange Shadow, Bewildering City (3)

Chapter 6 An Opportunity

"One, two, three… hmm… exactly five," Feng Bujue said as he walked into the center of the street, away from the brightest area under the streetlights.

He stepped directly onto the hood of a car, standing on top of it. Gripping the pipe wrench tightly in one hand, his eyes darted in all directions, listening intently. He stood at this high point in the dim light, risking himself as bait to lure the monster babies.

Wang Tanzhi took out his [Fruit Knife] and put on the piece of armor he'd obtained in the previous single-player survival mode—a black steel helmet that looked quite mismatched. He and Long Aomin stood back-to-back, not too far from the streetlights, each guarding a direction.

As for Gu Du and Ji Mo, their response was similar to those doomed characters in horror movies: the woman clinging to the man's arm, the man standing protectively in front of the woman—a suicide formation, plain and simple.

The shadows of the monster babies darted through the shadows on the street, using the shadows of buildings and vehicles to hide themselves. These monsters were indeed fast, appearing in the light for no more than a second at most, their figures flashing by.

Feng Bujue was standing farther from the streetlights, where there were more shadows. Unsurprisingly, he was the first to be attacked. A monster baby sprang up from the ground, leaping more than two meters high, attacking Feng Bujue from his side and rear.

He had anticipated this, turning to meet it, just in time to see the monster baby leap before him. The monster's skin was bronze-green, its body shaped like an infant, its face hideous. A mouthful of uneven yellow teeth jutted out of its mouth, and its forearms were replaced by two small scythes. Below the knees were a pair of animal legs, ending not in feet but in hooves.

Feng Bujue had chosen to stand on the car roof, considering that these monsters were less than a meter tall. To attack a high target, they would have to jump. Now that the monster baby had indeed jumped, it would be suspended in the air, unable to dodge for a short time…

In terms of strength, Feng Bujue clearly had the upper hand, and this was a calculated trap. Aiming at the monster baby's head, he brought the pipe wrench down from above with a resounding crack. The sound was sickening…

Imagine a watermelon flying toward your face, and you smash it in mid-air with a heavy stick. But that watermelon is filled with rotten liquid, thick pus, semi-congealed slurry, etc., all exploding in a rush, splattering towards you due to inertia…

That was the situation Feng Bujue was in. The "sewage" splattered on him even had a realistic smell. To put it poetically, Feng Bujue was now exuding a dark and mysterious aura. To put it bluntly… he reeked of corpse odor.

Although Feng Bujue had killed the monster baby with one blow, there were still four others around. Their numbers might be based on the number of players, but they were not programmed to attack each player individually.

Except for Feng Bujue, everyone else was standing under the lights. As anyone who's seen a horror movie knows, monsters specifically target those who are alone, so the other four ignored the others and surrounded Feng Bujue, who was in the darker area.

In this situation, Feng Bujue was indeed a bit tense, but he still didn't feel "fear." His mind remained calm, so he immediately ruled out the option of running back to the streetlights. He now had a sense of these monster babies' speed and knew that as soon as he got off the car roof, within five seconds, if two monster babies charged at him at the same time, one of his legs would be cut off by one of their scythes.

Standing on the same level, these short and swift monsters would be absolutely difficult to deal with. Feng Bujue estimated that with his current strength, he could handle a one-on-one fight on the ground, but a one-on-two would definitely result in injury.

The second monster baby pounced after about ten seconds. Feng Bujue didn't know when the other three would leap, but he had to deal with the one in front of him first. He repeated his previous tactic, swinging the pipe wrench down hard. This time, he didn't hit as accurately as the first time, but the pipe wrench still struck the side of the monster baby's head. The fire attribute and headshot effect provided a significant attack boost, successfully finishing off the second monster baby.

The third wave of attacks was launched before Feng Bujue could even retract his arm. This time, two monster babies pounced together, leaping from Feng Bujue's left and right rear sides simultaneously. If he turned to block, he could only stop one at most, and it was hard to say if he could kill it with one blow.

Just then, a golden light flashed in the distance, and a burly figure burst into the battle. Long Aomin slid in like he was on a skateboard, his feet never moving. It was clear that this movement was activating some kind of skill.

As expected of a level ten character, he was effective in combat. Long Aomin held the shield in front of him, using the skill to instantly close in on a monster baby, directly knocking it away. Then, he swung his arm wide, using the edge of the shield to graze the waist of another monster baby, causing it to lose its balance in the air and deviate from its attack trajectory.

Feng Bujue would not miss this opportunity. With this two-second delay, he had enough time to react, swinging the pipe wrench and taking down the waist-injured monster baby in one fell swoop. More smelly slurry splattered everywhere.

Seeing that he had dealt with this one, Long Aomin quickly ran towards the monster baby he had knocked away earlier. Reaching it, he knelt and pressed down with his shield.

The monster baby had just landed after being knocked away by the skill. Before it could steady itself, it saw a huge man charging at it and had to raise its forearm scythes to meet the attack. Although it sparked a few sparks on the shield's surface, as a weak monster, its strength was obviously not enough to cut through this fine piece of equipment that combined offense and defense.

Long Aomin roared and slammed down with the shield several times. After a few screams, the monster baby became like mincemeat, clearly dead.

"Where's the last one? Let's cut it up together." Wang Tanzhi had just run to the side. In fact, he and Long Aomin had charged over together, but Long Aomin had used a movement skill to arrive in half a second, while he had to run over, and in those few seconds, Long Ge had already completed one kill and one assist.

"Don't be careless, I don't think things will be so simp…" Before Feng Bujue could finish speaking, the surroundings suddenly went pitch black. All the lights in the city disappeared in that instant, including the moonlight in the sky.

The whole world seemed to be swallowed by something, plunging into complete darkness. Those breaths, whispers, laughter… at this moment, they became extremely clear, as if they were right next to everyone, in that darkness that was within reach but impossible to see clearly.

A few seconds later, like the opening CG of the game, the hazy moonlight shone down again, and the streetlights lit up again, restoring the brightness to its previous state.

And that last monster baby lurking in the shadows had undergone a drastic change after being baptized by that strange darkness.
