Chapter 16: THE ’ACCIDENT’
IT MUST suck to be a Yun Dujun hater while living in Seoul.
Wonyoung couldn’t help but think of the haters’ welfare while looking around.
He was surrounded by huge billboards, posters, and life-size standees of Yun Dujun wherever he looked.
Is there anything Dujun Sunbae-nim isn’t endorsing these days?
There were also digital ads for Yun Dujun playing in subway stations, too.
Those were prepared by his fans to congratulate him on his sixth debut anniversary.
So, Dujun Sunbae-nim debuted before I gave birth to Yun Yuhyun.
Hmm.
I think I remember that vaguely.
Anyway, Wonyoung found out that Yun Dujun’s fans were called ’YUNNIEs.’
It’s kinda cute— I can imagine calling myself a ’YUNNIE’ without being embarrassed.
Anyway, Yun Dujun wasn’t just endorsing brands.
My dude is the current Seoul Ambassador.
You couldn’t escape Yun Dujun even inside the trains because the Alpha was in charge of the public service announcements there.
Dujun Sunbae-nim is really everywhere.
Yun Dujun’s face was even plastered all over cosmetic surgery clinics in Gangnam.
Apparently, many men aspire to look like Sunbae-nim.
"I GOT DUJUN OPPA’S LEGENDARY SELCA!"
Wonyoung almost spilled his iced coffee when the group of high school students next to his table all squealed.
Aigoo.
He was waiting for Bae Gayoung in a café, and his cousin was running late already.
Fortunately, the students near him were keeping him entertained without their knowing.
The young girls bought the face mask and hand cream brand that Yun Dujun was endorsing.
According to the conversation I heard from them earlier, you get one ’blind’ photocard for every purchase.
And, apparently, most fans were hoping to get the legendary Yun Dujun photocard.
I wonder what kind of photocard that is.
It was amazing, really.
Dujun Sunbae-nim is an actor and not an idol, and yet people want his photocard.
Wonyoung got curious so he tried to spy on the next table as discreetly as possible.
Thankfully, the student was raising the photocard like she wanted everyone to worship it.
Well, the kid’s classmates were looking up at the photocard with their hands clasped together as if they were praying.
Pfft.
How cute.
Anyway, Wonyoung used that opportunity to look at Yun Dujun’s photocard.
Oh.
Now I can see why it’s legendary to the fans.
Three things.
First, Yun Dujun was bare-faced— and he still looked so damned good.
Second, Yun Dujun wore a headband— the kind you would use when washing your face. The headband was extra cute because it had dog ears.
Third, Yun Dujun wore a pajama with cute dog prints.
Oh, is ’dog’ Dujun Sunbae-nim’s representative animal?
But why?
"Puppy Dujun Oppa supremacy!"
Pfft.
These kids are funny.
For Wonyoung, Yun Dujun was more of a wolf.
Anyway, he tore his gaze away from the photocard before he got the urge to steal it from the student.
I mean, Dujun Sunbae-nim looks cute in that photocard...
"Wonyoung Oppa?"
Oh.
When Wonyoung raised his head, he was surprised when he saw Bae Gayoung— his younger cousin— standing in front of him awkwardly.
Okay.
When did this kid grow this much?
There was a six-year gap between them.
So, if I’m twenty-seven now, then the kid is twenty-one.
It was kind of shocking since Wonyoung’s most recent memory of her cousin was Bae Gayoung being in high school.
She’s an adult now.
He almost forgot how much the two of them resembled each other despite being just cousins and not siblings.
She’s like my female version now. Is it because we’re first cousins?
"Oppa?"
"Gayoung-ah, we should be thankful to our ancestors for giving us good genes."
"Yeah, you’re really Wonyoung Oppa— you still say the most random things out of the blue."
"Sit down, brat," Wonyoung said, pointing at the table across from him. And then he pointed at the table between them after Bae Gayoung took a seat. "I took the liberty of ordering your drinks and snacks. Do you still like matcha and cheesecake?"
"Yes, Oppa," Bae Gayoung said, removing her eyeglasses. "Thank you."
"Why did you remove your eyeglasses? You have terrible eyesight."
Wonyoung would know since he was the one who would always pay for Bae Gayoung’s eyeglasses every time she needed a new pair.
"I don’t deserve to even look at Oppa, so I removed my glasses."
Pfft.
Wonyoung couldn’t help but laugh at how funny Bae Gayoung was.
Yep, she’s still the same dramatic kid I remember.
"Oppa, I’m serious," Bae Gayoung complained lightly. "I don’t even know if I deserve to apologize to you after everything my parents have done to you. Well, I’ve always known that they abuse you, but I didn’t know they would go as far as stealing from you as soon as you fell into a coma." The kid paused for a moment as if she were having an inner debate with herself. "Having said that, even if I don’t have the right to say this, I still want to apologize to you, Oppa. I’m really sorry."
"Alright, I forgive you."
"Oppa, take it seriously, will you?"
"I’m being serious, though," Wonyoung said, and he also stopped smiling. "Gayoung-ah, do you not resent me? I’m the reason your parents got imprisoned."
"Don’t be ridiculous, Oppa. Appa and Eomma are in jail because they did you wrong. They committed crimes just to steal from you. So, even if it hurts to say this as their daughter, they deserve to be put behind bars."
Wonyoung smiled proudly. "And that’s why I know you deserve my forgiveness, even though I never resented you. Gayoung-ah, you were just a kid then, but you did your best to protect me from your parents. Plus, the only reason you always watch TV was because you knew I liked watching dramas, didn’t you?"
"But that was the only thing I was able to do for you, Oppa."
"And that was plenty enough for me to endure staying in that house for as long as I did."
"Oppa..."
"Let’s drop this ’drama,’" Wonyoung said, and then he pretended to complain. "I heard you stopped visiting me at the hospital so soon."
Bae Gayoung frowned. "Well, aside from the fact that I was to embarrassed to see Oppa, I also didn’t want to see Yun Du—"
Wonyoung put a finger on his nose and pointed at the table next to them discreetly.
Bae Gayoung glanced at the other table, and then she nodded when she noticed that the high school girls were still fangirling over Yun Dujun’s photocards.
She’s still quick-witted.
"I didn’t want to see your husband, Oppa," Bae Gayoung said, sighing. "I mean, I’m grateful that he supported me financially all this time. But that doesn’t make him a good person in my eyes."
"Oh, you sound mad at Sunbae-nim," Wonyoung commented curiously. "Why?"
"What do you mean by ’why,’ Oppa? Have you forgotten?" Bae Gayoung asked bitterly. "That person’s mother purposely crashed her car into the car you were in. Because of that ’accident,’ you had to deliver your baby earlier than scheduled. And then you fell into a coma."
What?
Wonyoung felt a shiver down his spine.
How could I forget something that important?!
"But you know what’s worse?" Bae Gayoung asked, thumping her closed fist against her chest. "Your husband didn’t do anything to punish his mother for almost killing you."
Wonyoung clutched his head tight. "Really? That happened?"
Bae Gayoung looked at Wonyoung, confused— before the realization hit the kid. "Oppa, you don’t remember the accident?"
***
HAAAH.
Wonyoung leaned against the headrest of the taxi while he sat in the backseat.
He had to go home early because he suddenly got a splitting headache.
Moreover, Bae Gayoung was being a little persistent.
"Oppa, losing your memory after the accident isn’t normal! Let’s go to the hospital. Please."
Wonyoung appreciated his younger cousin’s concern.
But, for some reason, he was against the idea of going to the hospital just to get help recovering his missing memories.
I don’t want to remember things I don’t have to...
"Ah, dammit!"
Wonyoung was surprised when the taxi driver suddenly cursed out loud before swerving around a corner, causing him to almost get sent flying to the other side of the car.
When he looked outside the window, he saw an SUV coming their way.
That was when things suddenly went slow-motion.
And then an unfamiliar memory flashed in Wonyoung’s head.
The image was blurry, but he couldn’t mistake Yun Dujun’s face for someone else, especially not the Alpha’s cold and deep voice.
"If you have to choose between the baby and the Omega, save my son first."
Oh.
Wonyoung realized that the ’scene’ playing in his head was the ’scene’ where he was rushed to the hospital after the ’accident,’ and the doctors made Yun Dujun choose between Wonyoung and the unborn baby in his womb.
Ah, Dujun Sunbae-nim chose to save Yun Yuhyun over me...
