Chapter 1238: Chapter 1238: Extra Story of the Eel 75

Li Li, engrossed in playing video games, didn’t notice the new message on his phone.

He had been absorbed in *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* all evening, playing until nine o’clock without realizing it. His stomach grumbled audibly, reminding him it was already late.

But Su Man still hadn’t shown up!

Li Li frowned, grabbed his phone, and glanced at it. Only then did he see the message Su Man had sent earlier.

"What the hell..." he muttered, "You went off to work overtime, and I’m just waiting here for nothing."

These kinds of assignments are usually ongoing. For example, if Su Man was tasked with managing traffic for a particular section of road, she wouldn’t just be responsible for one or two days—it would be at least a week. This week it might be Southeastern Road, and next week Northwestern Road. So if Su Man had her shift today, chances were she’d be on duty again tomorrow.

Li Li thought it was pointless. After contemplating for a moment, he packed up his things and decided to head home.

—As for the plan to smooth things over, he’d have to come up with another idea.

...

Li Li arrived home at about 10 p.m. The neighboring villas were brightly lit. His dad was backing the car out of the garage, while his mom and Su Man’s mother stood nearby, visibly anxious.

Curious, Li Li walked into the yard and looked at the three of them. "What’s going on? What happened?"

Li Li’s mom, her face heavy with worry, replied, "Manman was involved in an incident. She’s in the hospital, and we’re heading there to check on her."

After speaking, she comforted Su Man’s mom beside her, "Don’t worry too much. Manman surely knows her limits. When we get there, just talk things over calmly with them. Worst-case scenario, we’ll compensate more—it’ll be fine."

Su Man’s mom, eyes red with tears, said, "Money isn’t the problem. I’m really worried she might get involved in a legal case. She wants to become a detective—if she ends up with a record, what’ll happen to her future?"

"It won’t happen, it won’t happen!" Li Li’s mom shook her head urgently. "Don’t scare yourself like this. Let’s just head to the hospital and see how things stand first."

The two women, who usually loved to compare themselves to each other, would become remarkably united and considerate if one family faced trouble.

Li Li breathed a huge sigh of relief upon hearing this. Without thinking, he said, "You scared me half to death! I thought it was Su Man who got hurt, but turns out she injured someone else. I mean, really, who could possibly manage to send her to the hospital? That’s impossible!"

Li Li’s dad stretched a hand out through the car window and gestured for him to hop in. "Get in the car too. Hurry over and see what’s going on—Manman’s probably beside herself with worry right now."

The three didn’t say another word, jumped into the car one after another, and headed straight for the hospital.

From the phone call, all they knew was that Su Man had injured someone badly enough to send them to the hospital. Once they arrived, they finally pieced together what had happened—

Su Man was conducting a DUI checkpoint when a car pulled over to the roadside. Inside was a couple quarreling. The woman stormed out of the car, and the man chased after her and started attacking her. Unable to stand by, Su Man intervened. The man, however, refused to back down—he not only hurled insults but also attacked Su Man herself. During the scuffle, the man fell and hit his head on a piece of brick by the roadside, passing out.

The man had been rushed to the hospital but remained unconscious. The brain is the most delicate organ in the human body, and whether it was an external injury or internal trauma, no one could say for sure. All they could do was wait in the corridor for updates.

If the injury turned out to be serious, Su Man would inevitably be held accountable. A charge of accidental injury seemed difficult to avoid.

Now it just depended on how severe the man’s injuries were.

Su Man stood in the hallway with a blank expression, accompanied by a female colleague. A little farther away, a young woman sat crying on a row of chairs.

It was the injured man’s girlfriend.

This woman was worried that her boyfriend might have been fatally beaten by Su Man.
