Chapter 63: Priestess Yuan: My Foolish Grandson
"Grandmother—" Yuan Ni still wanted to say something.
"There is no need for you to say anything," said Priestess Yuan. She looked slightly annoyed as she stared at her grandson and then said to him, "You should be worried about yourself instead. You actually fell for a woman despite knowing that she betrayed someone as skilled and excellent as Xie Daiyu. What makes you think that she will be true to you? If I were you, I would choose someone like Ruan Chanchan."
She had taken a look at Ruan Chanchan’s soul. She didn’t tell it to Chief Xie, but the first time she saw Ruan Chanchan, she found out that the soul of the woman was way too pure. As if she had gone through many trials and tribulations to receive that kind of blessing from the heavens. This was something that Priestess Yuan knew was not easy to find.
This was also the reason why she asked Yuan Ni to get close to Ruan Chanchan. At least, Ruan Chanchan would treat her grandson with love and respect even if she were to have another mer by her side. Someone like Shao Xia, whose soul was riddled with way too many ambitions and so much greed, could never be a good partner.
Yuan Ni was shocked. He looked at his grandmother and said to her, "Grandmother, what are you even talking about? How can you push me into the arms of a fool?"
"What’s wrong with it?" Priestess Yuan frowned. She asked, "Do you think there is anything wrong with what I said?"
Raging with embarrassment and humiliation, Yuan Ni cried out, "Grandmother, you said that you would let me decide my wife. Besides, I am only trying to get to know Sister Xia; I am not looking forward to imprinting on anyone. Anyway, even if Ruan Chanchan is good, she cannot fight me. My wife should be strong enough to fight me and win. If she is someone like Ruan Chanchan, then I will die protecting her all her life, not to mention I would have to hunt her. How can we survive like this?"
"Do you even know what you are talking about? The only one who could defeat you in a fight is Xie Daiyu," the Priestess said with a stern expression and chided her grandson with great regret. "You are already twenty; you are way older than Ruan Chanchan and many other women because of your temper and demands. If you don’t find a wife soon, then you will be left behind. Others your age already have children. And their children are older than two or three years old."
"I don’t want to imprint, and even if I wanted to imprint, I would never choose someone like Ruan Chanchan," Yuan Ni stubbornly declared.
He didn’t want a wife who looked even softer than mers. He wanted someone who was strong enough to defeat a beast in a matter of a few seconds. Only then could they give birth to children who would grow up to become warrior-kind beastmen and women.
At least Shao Xia was strong; what was Ruan Chanchan? She could not even kill a small spider.
"Are you trying to act rebellious!?" Priestess Yuan was so angry that she smacked her magical staff on the floor of the cave. Her beast core started to glow beneath her skin, and her eyes turned red as she stared at her grandson. "You truly are the good son of your mother, trying to anger me to death."
"Grandmother! You were the one who promised that I could choose my wife." Yuan Ni was willing to lower his head over all kinds of matters, but he would absolutely not budge in such a matter. He had seen what could happen if he were to allow his grandmother to select his bride. Thus, even though he saw his grandmother close to losing control, he was not willing to yield. Not to mention, he didn’t like Ruan Chanchan at all. That woman was a fool.
How could he imprint on a fool? He didn’t want to!
"You—you have no idea what kind of great favour I am doing for you. As long as you imprint on her now, you will be able to become her mate. Later on, once Ruan Chanchan reaches great heights, you can only look at her from afar, and she won’t even look in your direction." Priestess Yuan spoke as if she could see the future, which was something that she could see more or less. "When that happens, even if you dream of imprinting on Ruan Chanchan, you can only dream of doing it. Why are you so unwilling? Do you think I will do anything to harm you?"
Priestess Yuan wanted to tie her grandson to Ruan Chanchan. This way, not only would she tie Ruan Chanchan to their tribe, but her grandson would also live a good life. However, who would have thought that her grandson would be this resistant?
"I don’t want to; you cannot just force me!" Yuan Ni turned his head to one side; he completely refused to imprint on Ruan Chanchan.
Ruan Chanchan: "..." Haha, as if I am dying to do it.
"I am not telling you to imprint on her right away. I am just telling you to get to know her just like Shao Xia." Priestess Yuan tried to reason with her grandson.
"Grandmother, I am not a fool," said Yuan Ni with a scoff. He knew his grandmother very well. If he tried to get close to Ruan Chanchan, his grandmother would tie him up and send him to Ruan Chanchan’s bed. Even though mers were the ones who decided their wives, there were times when their elders would intervene. And Yuan Ni didn’t want to take the risk.
"You..." Priestess Yuan shook her head. She looked at his grandson and saw the trouble that he would face due to his arrogance and stubbornness before turning to walk inside the cave. "You will surely regret it," because very soon he would be the one chasing after Ruan Chanchana, and the woman wouldn’t even give him a look. Her poor grandson would have to grovel a lot before he could win Ruan Chanchan’s heart back.
