Chapter 54: From Schoolyard to Stronghold

Chapter 54: From Schoolyard to Stronghold

The return to the base went on quickly since most of the monsters in the area had been killed, and now the others didn’t have much trouble in dealing with them given the extra levels.

Sure, things weren’t perfect yet; everyone still needed skills to really be safe, but for now, things were looking okay.

The return to the store base was a triumphant one. The rescued children and teachers were tired but safe, and they couldn’t wait to have a good meal.

Saving everyone brought a fresh wave of hope, especially for the parents who got their kids back. But not everyone was celebrating. Some kids and teachers didn’t make it, and worse, most of those kids had already lost their parents.

There was happiness, but also sorrow and tears.

Reidar watched from a corner as the survivors moved inside the base.

Laughter wasn’t just coming from the kids and parents, either. The whole place had a kind of festive vibe—not just from the rescue and finishing the quest, but because everyone had leveled up and gotten stronger. And that made it easier to protect their loved ones.

The battle at the school, as harrowing as it had been, had made everyone stronger. The massive influx of C.L.A.S.P. points from the thousands of defeated Rift-Sprites had brought the fighters to levels they hadn’t dreamed of reaching so quickly.

Malcolm’s core team now averaged level ten, and even the larger group of fifty had reached level seven or eight. They were no longer helpless survivors. Thanks to Reidar, they were becoming a capable fighting force in their own right, able to patrol the secured zones and handle threats without his intervention.

Yet, as Reidar observed the cheerful faces, he noticed no one seemed happier than Malcolm. The settlement’s leader, usually stoic, now had a light in his eyes that Reidar hadn’t seen before. The reason for this was clearly the weird item in his hands: The Settlement Creator Token.

Curious, Reidar approached him.

"Happy?"

"Reidar," Malcolm said, nodding slowly. "This... it’s more than I ever hoped for."

Reidar leaned closer, intrigued. "Because of the reward from the rescue quest?"

Malcolm nodded again and presented the item. The token was no larger than his palm. The item was made of silver with bronze edging. It had some intricate glyphs. No one knew what these glyphs did or what they meant. The only thing Reidar knew was that the carving on the token represented a building. A temple, if Reidar wasn’t wrong.

"This," Martin said. "This thing will really change everything."

Martin then shared the Settlement Creator Token’s information with Reidar. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

—[END]—

Reidar read through the description again.

<That’s cool...>

He understood the magnitude of what he was seeing. Having Keth’moran, the Vendor, was already a form of recognition from the system, a sign that their gathering of survivors was more than just a temporary camp.

But this token was something else entirely. It meant turning a makeshift shelter into a real city.

Being able to set laws and have the System back them up? That was going to be more than handy.

Given people were now living in an apocalypse, problems were going to arise, and a place where one could enforce rules meant keeping disputes to a civil level, especially considering that now people were getting used to killing.

<Killing monsters... Right... but from monsters to people, I bet not much will pass.>

The token meant order, justice, and a real structure. Something that could last. They wouldn’t have to rely on one person’s word anymore, or hope everyone just got along. They could build a community with rules that actually meant something.

The bonuses to construction, resource gathering, and defense would speed up their growth, but it was the monster-repelling field alone that was going to provide most of the benefits.

The repelling aura would work on the settlement, not on the building where the Vendor was. That was going to act as a secondary form of defense, true, but with a repelling field around the settlement, it meant that there was much more safe space for everyone.

Based on what Reidar saw on the way to the base, the settlement area was going to be relatively vast, although it didn’t encompass the entire city yet, but that was going to change in the future.

"I’m happy for you guys." Reidar was at a loss for words.

"Thanks," Malcolm said, his grin widening. "We couldn’t have done it without you. We just need to get rid of the behemoth now."

Malcolm looked at Reidar’s level.

—Reidar Miller—Level 24—

"You got your rewards too, eh?"

"I did," Reidar said. Malcolm nodded. "With this, I think you won’t have problems against the Behemoth."

"Yeah... I can probably kill it alone..."

"The sooner you do, the better for everyone... and for yourself..."

Reidar nodded. His mind went to the Level 18 monster in the hospital. He wondered what rewards would be tied to such a threat, especially now that he was stronger than the beast.

However, he pushed the thought aside. The past weeks had been a relentless grind of combat, and Reidar needed to rest.

The battle at the school had drained him more than he cared to admit, not just his mana, but his mental energy.

Besides, there were other things he needed to do: perks to assign, new skills to practice, and his own path to consider.

"If you’ll excuse me," Reidar said. "I think I’m going to find a quiet place and sleep for a day."

Malcolm chuckled in understanding. "You’ve earned it. Go. We’ll handle things here for a while."

As Reidar walked away, the sounds of planning and cheerful work faded behind him. The settlement was in good hands, and for the first time in a long time, he felt he could truly let his guard down, if only for a little while.
