Chapter 222: Chapter 222: Save the Elder or Save the Younger
Things were weighing on her mind, making it difficult to sleep soundly at night.
In the middle of the night, she was startled awake by a nightmare, and upon waking, discovered that outside was a vast expanse of white.
It was snowing again, and heavily.
Looking out at the still night sky and the pristine snow, Gu Lingling recalled her dream.
Since Yao Ruanqian died, she hadn’t dreamed of her again.
Unexpectedly, she had just dreamt of her.
What happened in the dream was just like what Gu Chunmei had mentioned during the day.
Basins of bloody water being carried out one after another.
"Oh dear, she’s got two in her belly, hurry up, do we save the mother or the child?" a midwife’s urgent voice.
"The contractions are so strong; did she eat something she shouldn’t have at noon?" The midwife continued.
"What could she eat? She eats whatever we eat," Old Mrs. Gu said. "Every day, she’s ridiculously pampered, always saving the child."
The final voice carried a touch of impatience.
Then the scene shifted, showing Yao Ruanqian looking weaker day by day.
Gu Lingling was frightened awake by this scene.
Early next morning, Gu Lingling trudged through the thick snow, determined to visit Wang in a neighboring village.
She knew that this dream was not just a result of hearing what Gu Chunmei said during the day; the dream must be some kind of warning to her.
Just like many of the previous dreams, didn’t they all come true in the end?
So she had to find Wang; she wanted to know what really happened back then.
On the way, the snow was quite thick, Gu Lingling worried that Old Sir Gu would be concerned, so she didn’t dare tell him the truth, only saying she was going to play at a classmate’s house in the village.
She’s becoming more understanding now, so Old Sir Gu didn’t doubt her words, only advising her to wear more clothes and be careful not to catch a cold.
The village where Wang lived was somewhat far from Nanshui Village, but closer to the army camp, though a small ravine had to be crossed.
Last night’s snow was heavy, almost reaching the calves, making the road difficult to travel.
After much effort, she crossed the ravine into the village, asked around for Wang’s house, and joyfully made her way there.
She didn’t come empty-handed; she brought some homemade pickled vegetables.
Wang was still assisting with births, and due to the heavy snow, hadn’t gone out that day. Seeing Gu Lingling, she asked, "Which family are you from?"
Gu Lingling gave her family name, and Wang was momentarily surprised before saying, "Are you from the family with twins in Nanshui Village?"
"Girl, what makes you remember to find this old lady?" Wang invited Gu Lingling inside, seeing she was carrying stuff, and had some understanding.
"I wanted to ask you about something." Gu Lingling said.
"To be honest, this matter has been on my mind for many years, I originally thought it would be something I’d take to my grave," Wang said with a faint smile, "Are you trying to ask about your mother?"
"You... you know?" Gu Lingling asked in surprise. "Was my mother really murdered?"
Thinking of this, Gu Lingling became agitated, looking at Wang impatiently.
"Child, you know your mother has been deceased for so many years," Wang sighed, although their villages were somewhat distant, she had heard some things about the Gu family.
She originally intended to take those words to her grave, but seeing this young girl in front of her, Wang felt conflicted about whether to speak or not.
"Grandmother, although my mother has passed for many years, as her children, I wish to uncover the events of that time in a way that honors her."
"Alright." After a long pause, Wang finally began to speak.
