Columns of blue light pierced through the entire demon tower.
The surrounding darkness was illuminated by these light beams.
Zhang Tian and his companions stood at the base of the demon tower, looking up. The blue columns formed a spiderweb, enshrouding the entire space.
"Damn it, boss, are these people having a big party inside the demon tower? The lights are so bright, Fatty can't help but imagine things," Wang Kaixuan exclaimed in shock.
"Brother Kaixuan, vulgar. You call this a big party? In English, it's called a party."
"What? Party?"
Fatty's eyes widened.
Were these monsters too unrestrained, starting it inside the demon tower?
"Uh, Brother Kaixuan, you might be thinking incorrectly."
Seeing Fatty tilt his head in thought, Wang Banyue instantly knew this guy had gone down the wrong path.
"Rumble."
While the two fatties were lost in their thoughts, the demon tower suddenly emitted strange rumbling sounds.
As the rumbling echoed, dark spectral figures began to emerge from the blue light columns.
"Look, what is that?" Shirley Yang pointed upwards.
Zhang Tian looked at the light columns.
"If I'm not mistaken, they should be demon souls." Zhang Tian said gravely.
Demon souls were anomalous soul bodies formed when people died and were possessed by evil spirits.
These soul bodies had their consciousness occupied by those malevolent entities, essentially becoming mere shells.
However, the tricky part was that killing these demon souls would not only destroy the evil spirits attached to them but also the original bodies.
In other words, killing them meant killing an innocent person.
"That's... Xizi... Huzhi." Hu Bayi's eyes widened.
A hint of excitement appeared on his darkened face.
He had actually seen the souls of his comrades within the blue demon souls.
Xizi, Huzhi, and others crawled out of the demon tower, their faces expressionless, their eyes hollow, like soulless bodies.
"No, this isn't the Xizi I know. What is happening?" Hu Bayi clenched his fists.
"Lao Hu, they are likely controlled by demon souls. These souls are probably the same." Zhang Tian patted Hu Bayi's shoulder, observing the scene.
"Demon souls, are they the soul bodies produced after those demons and evil spirits die?" Hu Bayi asked.
People have souls after death, and so do demons and evil spirits, though in different forms.
"Yes, let's try not to kill them, or it will be troublesome." Zhang Tian nodded.
"But, boss, there are too many of them." Fatty cried out.
From within the light columns, it was like a bottomless pit, with souls of the deceased continuously emerging.
To describe the scene, it was like an ant swarm attacking an elephant.
As the light flickered, the demon souls gradually approached the base of the demon tower.
Demon souls lacked intelligence and likely acted only on command.
Zhang Tian surmised that the monsters inside the demon tower were controlling them.
Soon, the demon souls had assembled, standing before the demon tower, their bodies and eyes faintly emitting a blue glow.
Zhang Tian couldn't count how many demon souls there were.
However, it was worth noting that the movements and expressions of the demon souls were almost identical.
"There are too many. I wonder how strong they are," Wang Banyue murmured, a hint of confusion on his face.
"The strength of these things generally isn't too high, but I don't recommend killing them," Zhang Tian said.
Everyone was stunned when he finished speaking.
"Why, boss? There are so many. If we don't kill them, subduing them is simply unrealistic," Fatty said.
Zhang Tian shook his head.
"These things are parasites within souls. If you kill them, it's equivalent to killing the soul."
"Obliteration of the soul. Such a death is against principles, and you will surely face punishment after death." Zhang Tian explained.
Fatty couldn't help but swallow.
Good heavens, so many souls, and they couldn't be killed, only subdued. The difficulty had just increased significantly.
"Heh heh..."
As Zhang Tian spoke, the souls clearly had no intention of giving Zhang Tian and his group time to breathe. They charged towards Zhang Tian as if they had no regard for their own lives.
A blue "flood" continuously flowed.
They were like monsters, wanting to devour Zhang Tian and his companions.
"Boss, we can't fight this at all." Fatty looked at the flood-like monsters before him, feeling a sense of helplessness.
"The strength of such a massive monster horde can't be high. The main strategy must be numbers."
"Brother Zhang, do you have any defensive measures?" Shirley Yang asked, turning her gaze to Zhang Tian.
Zhang Tian nodded and scattered a large number of golden talismans.
"I'll set up a few defensive formations. Once they're formed, I'll try to drive out those demon souls."
Zhang Tian chanted an incantation, forming hand seals. The talismans emitted golden light.
The light spread, and soon, a shield of golden light enveloped Zhang Tian and his group.
The shield enclosed them, and the soul bodies rushed forward.
They had no weapons, only their hands and teeth.
"Roar, roar."
Souls surrounded Zhang Tian and his companions, continuously pounding on the golden shield. Although the shield shook slightly, its defensive power remained unaffected.
As they were surrounded, Zhang Tian began to notice something.
Although the faces and eyes of these individuals were empty and soulless, they seemed to be able to repeat their actions from life.
For example, Zhang Tian spotted a soldier from the Han Dynasty, wearing ancient armor. Though he had no weapon, he mimicked chopping motions.
There were also modern soldiers.
Zhang Tian quickly noticed a pilot.
With his strong physique and skills, the pilot launched a series of attacks against the shield.
"Boss, this is a hodgepodge. Why are people from everywhere here?" Fatty commented, looking at the chaotic souls.
These people were indeed too diverse. It seemed as if everyone who had died in the Kunlun Mountains after the demon tower appeared had been sent here.
"Xizi, Huzhi, do you still remember me?" Hu Bayi looked at the figures in green cotton-padded military overcoats with urgency.
This was definitely not an illusion. These souls were indeed his comrades from years ago.
"Lao Hu, let's try using the Exorcism Incantation to see if we can get these demon souls out," Zhang Tian said to Hu Bayi.
Among them, only Zhang Tian and Hu Bayi understood some Taoist magic. Others would only harm themselves if they acted rashly.
Although these souls weren't strong, they were living people.
Hu Bayi nodded.
They began to chant the Taoist Exorcism Incantation.
Exorcism incantations were not exclusive to Buddhism; Taoism also possessed them, with a long history.
As the sound of the Exorcism Incantation filled the air, Wu Tianzhen's eyes showed a flicker of hope.
"It seems to be working!" Wu Tianzhen exclaimed excitedly.
