"What exactly happened?"
Chen Jinzhao didn't quite understand what Man Xiong was saying. Man Xiong said dejectedly, "That place was indeed the Divine Kingdom Research Institute, but when we rushed there, we exchanged fire with their people a few times. After we killed all the guards, everyone inside the Divine Kingdom Research Institute was dead."
"A total of two hundred and two lives. Do you know how cruel that was?"
"How did they die?" Chen Jinzhao frowned.
Xu Hanchen said, "They were all poisoned. The mastermind knew we were going to attack the Divine Kingdom Research Institute. To prevent us from obtaining their secrets, the mastermind activated a self-destruct device and released poison gas, killing everyone in the institute."
Not a single survivor was left.
Man Xiong also added, "Speaking of which, this Divine Kingdom Research Institute is truly terrifying. There were many corpses in the laboratories, including the elderly, the young, women, the disabled, and the pregnant. Some of our soldiers broke down when they saw those scenes."
"It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it hell."
Chen Jinzhao's expression grew even more solemn. "This is just a small outpost. How terrifying must the Divine Kingdom's headquarters be?"
Xu Hanchen said, "I've already sent people to investigate Divine Kingdom Pharmaceuticals, but I doubt we'll find anything. Those bastards are too cunning."
Chen Jinzhao nodded.
Given the caution of Divine Kingdom Pharmaceuticals, they would definitely not leave any traces. No matter how they investigated, they wouldn't find anything.
"Old Xu, has my cousin been found?" Chen Jinzhao was concerned about this.
Xu Hanchen nodded. "She has been found, but not by us. Those people released her. When we asked her where she was taken, Wu Lingyun clearly didn't know. She's still a bit disoriented."
"Where is she? I want to see her!"
Five minutes later.
Chen Jinzhao arrived outside another hospital room. Wu Lingyun was recuperated there. Several doctors were standing outside the room. Chen Jinzhao walked up and asked, "Doctors, how is my cousin doing?"
The leading old professor, upon seeing Chen Jinzhao again, was still full of amazement.
This was the only miracle he had witnessed in his many years of medical practice.
Putting aside these thoughts, the old professor said, "The patient has no internal or external injuries, just a bit of fright. She'll be fine after a few days of rest in the hospital. During this time, it's best not to expose her to any more mental shock."
Chen Jinzhao nodded. "Thank you, Professor. I'll go in and see her."
He pushed the door open and saw Wu Lingyun, who had changed into a patient gown, sitting on the bed, hugging her knees and staring blankly.
She didn't even notice Chen Jinzhao entering the room.
Chen Jinzhao didn't deliberately try to be quiet. He walked to Wu Lingyun's side in a normal manner. Wu Lingyun didn't even lift her head. Seeing her like this, Chen Jinzhao felt heartbroken. After spending so much time together, he had long regarded Wu Lingyun as his own sister.
"Lingyun, can you hear me?" Chen Jinzhao stood by the bed and spoke softly.
Ten seconds later.
Wu Lingyun finally looked up in a daze, her eyes finding Chen Jinzhao.
Seeing the confusion in her eyes, Chen Jinzhao felt even more pained. He continued, "What's wrong? Did something unhappy happen? Don't keep sad things to yourself, you can talk to me about them."
"Cousin, am I still alive?" Wu Lingyun finally spoke, which made Chen Jinzhao breathe a sigh of relief.
He quickly said, "Of course you're alive, and I'm alive too. Not only must you live, but you must live well, understand?"
Wu Lingyun's gaze was vacant; she didn't reply.
Chen Jinzhao took her hand, allowing her to feel some warmth, and continued to comfort the frightened Wu Lingyun.
Finally.
Tears welled up in Wu Lingyun's eyes, and she burst into tears. She broke free from Chen Jinzhao's hand and hugged him, sobbing, "Cousin, I'm still alive. I can't believe I didn't die. Do you know that for days I thought I was already dead."
Chen Jinzhao felt the trembling of Wu Lingyun's body and his heart ached even more.
He said softly, "It's okay now. With me here, no one can harm you. Can you tell me what kind of place you were taken to?"
Wu Lingyun hesitated several times, but ultimately couldn't speak. It was evident that the experience had caused significant trauma to her psyche, which would take time to heal.
Chen Jinzhao said with heartache, "If you don't want to recall this experience, then forget it. Perhaps that will make it easier."
"No, I think I should still tell you," Wu Lingyun said.
"The night I first arrived in Fengtian, I was drugged and taken to a dark place. I don't know where that place was, only that the air was filled with a strong smell of alcohol."
Chen Jinzhao thought of something. "Continue, I'm listening."
Wu Lingyun sniffled and continued, "Actually, they didn't harm me. Perhaps they were wary of my identity. I had some limited freedom to move around in that place, but that wasn't the most terrifying part. The most terrifying thing was that I personally witnessed new people being brought in every day, entering alive and leaving as corpses."
"It was a laboratory, conducting some inhuman experiments," Chen Jinzhao added.
"Yes!"
Wu Lingyun nodded vigorously.
"That's right, it was a laboratory, but the subjects of the experiments were humans. I once saw them disembowel an infant less than a year old. Those memories are too painful for me."
It was evident in Wu Lingyun's trembling voice that she was terrified to the extreme.
She was on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Chen Jinzhao softly comforted Wu Lingyun, allowing her to gradually calm down.
She was still crying and said, "I also saw a little girl, about seven or eight years old, covered in long black hair. But she had a kind heart and became my brief friend. Later, I heard the lab people say she was a defective product. I watched with my own eyes as she was eaten alive by another experimental subject."
Just hearing these descriptions conjured images of a hellish realm in Chen Jinzhao's mind. Wu Lingyun's eyes were red, and she asked sadly, "Cousin, what is the origin of that laboratory? Why isn't anyone stopping them?"
Chen Jinzhao hesitated, reluctant to tell her the truth.
Seeing Chen Jinzhao's expression, Wu Lingyun guessed something. "Cousin, you mean all of this is related to..."
Before she could finish her words, Chen Jinzhao raised his hand to cover her mouth and shook his head. "Some things are best kept to yourself. You don't need to say them out loud."
Chen Jinzhao's words were equivalent to acknowledging Wu Lingyun's thoughts.
This made Wu Lingyun's pupils contract sharply.
"This is also why you were able to walk out of that place alive," Chen Jinzhao said, making the last sliver of hope in Wu Lingyun's heart vanish. She murmured, "Why would they conduct these anti-human experiments? I want to know!"
"It's useless. If they had a shred of conscience, how could they do such things?" Chen Jinzhao retorted.
This question left Wu Lingyun speechless.
It seemed.
Chen Jinzhao was right.
Wu Lingyun clenched her fists secretly. If it was indeed them, she would make them pay the price they deserved!
She was a woman of her word.
