Chapter 23 The Perilous Hearts of the Apocalypse

"You don't pick at your food, so I'll give the rest to you."

Fu Yunlei pursed his lips. He had been spoiled and picky since childhood too.

An Nuan slept for two hours. When she woke up, she heard the community broadcast asking everyone to gather in the small square to line up for supplies.

Now that they were under lockdown, they received supplies every three days based on headcount, just like in the planned economy era.

The so-called supplies were essentially basic water and staple foods, with a little bit of vegetables.

In better-off areas, there would be meat, fruit, and even cola and ice cream. This depended on the specific community.

Wealthier districts would naturally receive more resources.

The community they lived in wasn't wealthy, but it wasn't bad either, and the first batch of supplies was decent.

Luoluo asked, "Xiao Nuan, we don't lack food or clothing, so should we go get it? The sun is so hot, and queuing is quite tiring."

"Of course, we have to go. If we act like we don't need anything, others might think we have plenty. If they decide to attack us, it will be troublesome."

Luoluo thought An Nuan made sense. But they had awakened abilities, making them much stronger than ordinary people. Who dared to snatch their things? They could just kill them. What was there to fear?

An Nuan knew what Luoluo was thinking. Among the first batch of people who awakened abilities, many relied on their superior powers to snatch supplies and even openly provoke others. As a result, they incurred public wrath and many were beaten to death. An individual's strength had its limits. They could handle one against a hundred, but what about one against a thousand, or ten thousand? Fighting unarmed people was one thing, but what if the opponent had AKs, grenades, or even bombs? A first-tier ability user, with strong overall combat capabilities, could defeat a third-tier ability user. A group of ordinary people could also kill ability users.

An Nuan wanted to establish the correct concept for them and also eliminate all potential dangers. By trying to hide among ordinary people and live unnoticed, they could gain greater benefits.

After An Nuan's second "Apocalypse Survival Class," Luoluo and Chang Kaitong had a more objective view of their abilities.

Chang Kaitong volunteered, "Sister, you two rest at home. I'll go queue up and get it!"

"They're distributing based on headcount, so we might as well take it. Let's all go." Who wouldn't want more supplies? An Nuan certainly didn't mind.

She put on her baseball cap, held her parasol, and led Luoluo and Chang Kaitong to the small square to queue for food.

Before buying the house, she had investigated and found that the occupancy rate of the community was only 30%, with the third phase still under construction and the second phase still on sale. There weren't many residents. At this time, only about a hundred people had come to collect supplies.

When An Nuan arrived, a line had already formed, and they stood at the end.

An auntie sized up Luoluo for a moment and then came over with a smile, "Daughter, are you here to get supplies? Where are your parents? Why aren't they with you?"

"Yes, young lady, are you living alone? Do you need our help?" Behind the auntie, a man and a woman stared at Luoluo with shining eyes, looking like wolves eyeing prey.

Luoluo wasn't stupid. Having stayed in affluent circles for so many years, she could guess these people's intentions perfectly. They likely wanted to test her, and if they determined she was alone, they might try to rob her later.

Luoluo responded coolly, "I'm queuing with my younger brother and sister. My parents have gone out to buy things and will be back soon. My boyfriend is at home helping to store water, in case of water or electricity outages, so we don't run out of drinking water."

The supply convoy had arrived half an hour ago. It was normal for someone to go out to scout and secure supplies. Luoluo had even fabricated a boyfriend to let them know there was a man at home, a source of strength, so they wouldn't dare to barge in casually.

"Oh, is that so..." The auntie was instantly disappointed. She had thought the young lady looked delicate and petite, easy to bully. She hadn't expected her family to be so large.

The auntie's daughter-in-law sized up Luoluo with some disbelief. "Young lady, how old are you to have a boyfriend? Early dating isn't good; studies are more important."

"Tsk, such a low-level probe, how boring." An Nuan couldn't stand it. She turned and said with a faint smile, "My sister isn't young anymore, she's already 30. Don't be fooled by her!"

"Ah! 30 years old?" The younger sister-in-law couldn't believe it. She was also 30 and looked much older than Luoluo.

Luoluo's mind was filled with a thousand wild horses galloping by. With a smiling face, she said, "Yes, I'm 30. I was supposed to have my wedding next month, but this damned heavy rain... Ah, it seems I'll have to postpone it."

"It's okay, Sister. Brother-in-law's father and elder brother said that once the situation improves, we'll have a bigger celebration!" Chang Kaitong chimed in with a smile.

The younger sister-in-law's family fell silent. If their family alone, plus the brother-in-law's family, was so numerous, how could these few people possibly compete for resources?

An Nuan and her companions collected their supplies. As expected, they received three bottles of mineral water per person, which worked out to one bottle a day. While not enough for normal consumption, it ensured they wouldn't die of thirst. Then came a bunch of vegetables, mostly leafy greens that wouldn't keep long. Even though they were preserved as well as possible, given the prolonged heavy rain, they were wilted. Some were almost rotten but were still distributed. The most abundant items were steamed buns and flatbreads, a bag for each person. They couldn't choose the size or type; whatever they received was what they got. During this special period, after a few grumbles, people could only accept the supplies and leave.

An Nuan's only solace was that they received an apple and a bottle of yogurt that day. These were precious items in the apocalypse. Luoluo and Chang Kaitong couldn't fully understand her feelings, but they were happy too. As long as An Nuan was happy, they were happy.

The three of them took a roundabout route and entered a villa, then secretly slipped into their home through a tunnel. As soon as they returned, they saw a bird pecking at their door.

"Crystals, crystals!"

"Damn, even the birds have become intelligent!"

"Sister Luoluo, this is a mechanical bird. It's just made too realistically."

Luoluo looked closely and found a chip in the bird's eye. She sighed, "It's so impressive that mechanical birds are made this realistically!"

An Nuan opened the door, and the mechanical bird hopped inside. She took out the spoils of the evening, and the mechanical bird opened its mouth.

"Pour them in, pour them in."

An Nuan poured all the crystals into the bird's mouth, filling its belly perfectly. After eating enough, the mechanical bird flapped its wings twice and spat out a chip from under its tongue. Its eyes emitted lasers at the chip, constructing what appeared to be a thin, black steel dagger.

An Nuan recognized it immediately. "Laser Dagger!" This was a highly lethal weapon developed by the science team in the third year of the apocalypse. How could it appear here!
